Directorial Resolution Ends Giant Squid Extraction Activities Effective June 21, 2025
LIMA – Peru's Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), through the General Directorate of Supervision, Oversight, and Sanction, has issued Directorial Resolution No. 00112-2025-PRODUCE/DGSFS-PA, which orders the conclusion of extractive activities for the giant squid or pota (Dosidicus gigas) resource, effective 00:00 hours on June 21, 2025. This decision is made as the initial Total Allowable Catch Limit (LMCTP) established for the period between January 1 and August 31, 2025, has been reached
 The initial LMCTP for giant squid or pota in 2025 was set at 304,209 tons by Ministerial Resolution No. 000123-2025-PRODUCE and its amendments. The Directorate of Supervision and Oversight, after verifying that this limit had been reached, recommended the conclusion of the extractive activity.
The General Fishing Law establishes that hydrobiological resources within Peru's jurisdictional waters are patrimony of the Nation , and it is the State's responsibility to regulate their integral management and rational exploitation, considering fishing activity as a matter of national interest. The Ministry of Production determines fishing management systems, catch quotas, and fishing seasons, based on available scientific evidence and socioeconomic factors, to ensure the preservation and rational exploitation of hydrobiological resources.
Ministerial Resolution No. 000001-2025-PRODUCE delegates to the General Directorate of Supervision, Oversight, and Sanction the authority to conclude extractive activities when the LMTC or quota is reached or estimated to be reached, or when the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE) recommends it due to environmental or biological conditions.
Once extractive activities for the giant squid or pota resource have concluded, vessel owners dedicated to its extraction may carry out landings, provided they have a departure authorization issued before the effective date of the conclusion of extractive activities as referred to in the preceding article.
The Directorial Resolution, digitally signed by Daniel Hugo Collachagua Perez, General Director of Supervision, Oversight, and Sanction , will be published on the Ministry of Production's Institutional Portal.
