The "Fisheries and Aquaculture Statistical Yearbook" launches a friendly platform with updated indicators from the year 2000 to date. It includes norms and regulations, indicators on landings and aquaculture, list of species by region, raw material and production, fishing plants, among others. The data is open access and available to industry players, decision makers, researchers and civil society.

At the close of the Month of the Sea, Sernapesca and Data Observatory (DO) launched a platform that provides data in a friendly way about Chilean industrial, artisanal, and aquaculture fishing, with 22 years of history. The data is open and searchable by decision makers from the public sector and industry, as well as researchers and civil society representatives.

In December 2022, the National Fisheries Service (Sernapesca) through its Information Management Department and the Sernapesca Analysis Unit, together with Data Observatory (DO), signed a collaboration agreement. The latter corresponds to a public-private-academic, non-profit entity, created to acquire, store, process, analyze and make available large volume and quality data sets.

Until today, Sernapesca published a fishing yearbook with fishing data from the entire national maritime territory, displayed in non-integrated forms and in various formats, which made it difficult for many to consult said information. The new platform gathers data captured by Sernapesca, processed and validated, including landings categorized by region, operational production plants, regulations and laws, statistics, glossaries of terms and a list of more than 267 species categorized at the national level.

Rodrigo Roa, executive director (I) of Data Observatory, pointed out: "It is an open data repository, understood as those that can be freely used, reused and redistributed by anyone, which, when published in readable formats. As of today, they are publicly available, ensuring that they can be freely distributed by anyone, always safeguarding the security and reliability of the data."

The National Director of Sernapesca, Soledad Tapia Almonacid, stated that she was very satisfied and pleased, because this alliance allows the delivery of much friendlier information to citizens. "Sernapesca carried out its digitalization process between 2010 and 2019, providing a large volume of data in quality and quantity to carry out processes and that, in our role as inspector, we hope to improve and move from a descriptive stage to a predictive one, hand in hand of specialists and in a collaborative and highly innovative way of working”, said Tapia.

The agreement is in line with the mission of Sernapesca, a public body that monitors compliance with fishing and aquaculture regulations, providing services to facilitate their correct execution and carry out effective health management, in order to contribute to the sustainability of the sector and the protection of hydrobiological resources and their environment.
