Statistical Mirage: Squid Season End Halts Growth in Argentina’s Official Landing Numbers

Wednesday, May 06, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

While Government figures show a 15% year-on-year increase, the North Stock collapse and plummeting exports signal a sector-wide cooling.

The official fishing landing records in Argentina, which until a few weeks ago showed a "furious green" growth trend, have begun to lose intensity. According to reports from Revista Puerto, the early closure of the squid (Illex) season in the Northern Management Unit—caused by low resource abundance—has dampened the momentum of statistics reflecting fleet activity across the maritime coast.

As of April 28, total landings declared before the Undersecretariat of Fisheries reached 352,000 tons, representing a 15% increase compared to the same period last year. However, the bulk of this growth was sustained by squid, which, at 186,000 tons, recorded a 37% surge—a boost that will begin to evaporate following the season’s end.

Species and Port Breakdown

The detailed catch report for the first four months of 2026 reveals a disparate reality for the Argentine Sea's primary resources:

  • Common Hake (Merluza hubbsi - South Stock): Reached 85,000 tons, an 11% growth compared to 2025.

  • Patagonian Shrimp: Records a 13% drop, with only 50,000 tons landed.

  • Coastal Varied Fishing: In Mar del Plata, this sector maintains a negative trend of 37%, highlighted by sharp declines in Croaker (4,500 tons, -32%) and Stickfish (1,386 tons, -39%).

For its part, Mar del Plata remains the primary port with 122,000 total tons (+7%). Nevertheless, the local logistics sector faces an uncertain outlook: the 50,000 tons of squid that will fail to arrive this year due to the season's closure will directly impact frozen-goods stevedores and transporters.

Incentives Amid Export Decline

Despite the fact that landing numbers at the pier appear positive, the commercial reality is different. Unofficial figures indicate that exported tons were reduced by 70% in the first quarter. Faced with this scenario, the Port Consortium seeks to incentivize local cargo departure through economic benefits:

  • Companies exporting between 25% and 50% of their landed volume will receive a 25% monthly discount on the port usage fee.

  • If exports reach 75%, the benefit is extended for three months.

  • A cargo fee subsidy is included, equivalent to approximately $50 per container.

In contrast to the situation in Buenos Aires province, in ports such as Caleta Paula (Santa Cruz) and Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut), the increase in hake landings (14,000 and 10,000 tons respectively) does translate into genuine employment for land-based plants, as these consist mostly of fresh catches for reprocessing.
