Dutch Innovator Taps Consistent Power of Tides to Deliver Green Energy, with Ambitious Plans for European Expansion After Successful Funding Round

Ameland, Netherlands – Dutch company SeaQurrent is making significant strides in transforming renewable energy generation with its innovative TidalKite System, leveraging the predictable power of tidal currents for sustainable electricity production. The company's unique underwater technology, which operates by moving in a figure-eight motion much like a kite, efficiently captures kinetic energy from tidal flows.

The TidalKite system: it's more than just a kite

The inspiration for SeaQurrent's pioneering approach stemmed from its founder's experiences kitesurfing and sailing on the Wadden Sea, where the immense energy potential of tidal currents became evident. What began as a three-person endeavor driven by a desire for positive environmental impact has grown into a dedicated team of 25 experts committed to delivering reliable and eco-friendly energy solutions, making clean energy more accessible through the consistent force of tides.

The TidalKite System: A Breakthrough in Tidal Power

The TidalKite system represents a notable advancement in the field of tidal energy. Its design incorporates multiple wings, enabling it to capture energy across a large area and ensuring continuous power generation irrespective of weather conditions. This cutting-edge technology converts the kinetic energy of tidal currents into electricity by driving a hydro motor connected to a generator, providing a consistent source of green energy year-round.

Co-founder Maarten Berkhout explained the system's unique advantages: "The Dutch Wadden area’s tidal energy is found in its shallow tidal channels between the islands, with relatively lower current speeds. The TidalKite’s ability to cover larger areas than traditional turbines enhances energy access and cost efficiency and makes it possible to exploit the Wadden Sea tidal resource." Unlike the inherent intermittency of solar and wind energy, which often necessitates extensive energy storage solutions, tidal energy offers inherent consistency and reliability.

BlueInvest Fuels SeaQurrent's Growth

SeaQurrent's progress has been significantly bolstered by support from the BlueInvest Fundraising Assistance Programme, which successfully matched the company with a fundraising expert. This invaluable assistance provided critical insights, guiding SeaQurrent through its equity funding journey and strengthening its proposals for subsidies. According to Maarten Berkhout, "Most valuable were the pitch and Q&A trainings, which helped us learn how to respond specifically and convincingly to investor questions, effectively bringing us to the next level."

Following the successful closure of their recent investment round, the TidalKite System is now undergoing testing near the Dutch island of Ameland. The company anticipates that the system will begin supplying electricity from tidal flows to approximately 700 households by the end of 2025. Looking ahead, SeaQurrent has ambitious plans for expansion into other European markets, including Ireland, France, and the United Kingdom, countries with significant tidal energy potential. In the long term, SeaQurrent aims to double the existing tidal energy market by complementing current technologies, thereby extending the reach and impact of clean tidal power globally.
