National Organization Highlights Leadership in Third-Party Certifications and Collaborative Efforts for Ocean Stewardship Amidst Global Conservation Focus.

OTTAWA, ON – The Fisheries Council of Canada (FCC) has issued a strong reaffirmation of its members' unwavering commitment to sustainable fishing practices across all three of Canada's coasts, emphasizing the significant advancements achieved by the Canadian fish and seafood industry in responsible ocean stewardship.

"As global attention intensifies on marine conservation, particularly with the release of David Attenborough’s latest ocean documentary, FCC members advocate for a more balanced perspective that acknowledges the robust, science-based ocean stewardship integral to today’s fishing industry," stated Jason McLinton, President of the Fisheries Council of Canada.

McLinton further noted the substantial evolution of the Canadian fishing industry over recent decades. "Our members have been at the forefront of this evolution, diligently developing and implementing cutting-edge technologies that effectively minimize environmental impact while simultaneously providing crucial economic support to the numerous coastal communities that rely on these valuable resources."

FCC Members: Leaders in Sustainability

The FCC proudly highlights that its member companies consistently rank among the top five globally in the rate of third-party sustainability certifications awarded by the esteemed Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). This significant achievement positions Canadian fisheries as some of the most sustainably managed worldwide, a testament to decades of dedicated investment in science-driven management strategies and comprehensive conservation practices.

"Healthy oceans are not merely an environmental necessity; they form the very bedrock of our members’ livelihoods and the enduring legacy of Canada’s fishing heritage," added McLinton, underscoring the intrinsic link between ecological health and economic viability for the industry.

FCC members operating across Canada’s diverse Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic waters are guided by a long-term vision of sustainability, recognizing the fundamental dependence of their businesses on thriving marine ecosystems. This commitment extends beyond simple adherence to regulations, with numerous companies voluntarily exceeding established requirements through proactive, industry-led conservation initiatives.

The robust regulatory framework governing FCC members necessitates close collaboration and deep engagement with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). Furthermore, it requires FCC members to adhere to some of the most stringent protocols concerning fishing gear, operational locations, and fishing practices. This collaborative partnership ensures transparency and accountability within the sector through comprehensive monitoring systems, including the deployment of at-sea observers and the implementation of advanced electronic reporting technologies.

"Our members are deeply invested in the long-term health and productivity of Canada’s oceans and fisheries," concluded McLinton. "We fully recognize our inherent responsibility as stewards of these vital resources and remain steadfast in our commitment to continuous improvement in how we sustainably harvest seafood for the benefit of generations to come."
