Surge in loligo squid in the Falklands boosts fleet and strengthens sector confidence

Monday, April 20, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

Catches surpass 2024 levels and confirm the recovery of this key species—distinct from illex squid—though concerns remain over costs and the upcoming season

The fleet of joint ventures with Vigo-based capital operating in the Falklands (Malvinas) fishing grounds is approaching the final stretch of the first annual loligo squid season with optimism, after recording higher catches than last year, when the season closed at around 38,000 tons, as reported by Mauro Borrazás from the Galician news outlet Atlántico.

The sector emphasizes that this positive trend specifically related to loligo squid, a species distinct from illex squid, which follows different biological and commercial dynamics within the South Atlantic fishery.

According to industry sources, current data reflects a progressive recovery of the stock, which is once again reaching levels considered healthy. “The situation is going well and we believe we are returning to normality; there are good catches, adequate sizes, and positive biomass levels,” industry representatives state.

The improvement is largely attributed to conservation measures implemented in previous seasons, designed in line with scientific criteria. Shipowners believe that limiting fishing effort in earlier years was decisive: “The decision was the right one,” they affirm, while stressing the need to maintain science-based management of the fishing grounds.

The fleet currently consists of 16 freezer trawlers, flying the Falkland Islands flag but based in Vigo. According to the sector, the resource’s behavior is stable: “Migrations are occurring normally and the squid is found in the usual areas, in abundance,” they explain.

This scenario contrasts with the second season of 2025, which was marked by uncertainty due to a decline in biomass that even led to discussions of an early closure. The situation was even more critical a year earlier, when the fleet was unable to operate during that second season.

Despite the current positive results, the sector remains cautious about the next phase of the year, especially significant as it is the period when squid reach larger sizes and higher market value. “We are expectant, but seeing how the first season is evolving, we trust that the situation will remain positive,” they note.

Among the main challenges is the increase in operating costs, particularly fuel. Companies warn about the impact of the international context on diesel prices: “With the conflict in the Middle East, prices rise very quickly and sharply, but we know they take a long time to come back down,” they conclude.
