Vietnam’s Seafood Exports Surge in Early 2026, but Growth Shows Signs of Cooling

China and Hong Kong drive nearly half of gains as global demand volatility tempers momentum

Vietnam’s seafood industry posted solid growth in the first quarter of 2026, with exports reaching $2.64 billion, up nearly 8% year-on-year, despite a noticeable slowdown in March that signals a more uncertain global market outlook.

According to Ms. Le Hang, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the sector’s growth moderated after a strong start to the year. In March 2026, seafood exports totaled approximately $927 million, marking an increase of just over 5% compared to the same period in 2025—a sharp drop from the nearly 20% growth recorded in the first two months.

China Emerges as the Dominant Growth Engine

The standout driver behind Vietnam’s export performance was China and Hong Kong, which remained the largest markets in the first quarter. Export value to these markets reached approximately $764 million, soaring nearly 45% year-on-year.

In March alone, shipments exceeded $250 million, representing a surge of more than 50%, the highest growth among all major markets.

This surge not only offset declines in key destinations such as the United States, Japan, and South Korea, but also underscored China’s pivotal role in sustaining overall industry growth.

Three key factors fueled this momentum:

  • Seasonal demand linked to the Lunar New Year in mid-February 2026, which drove strong consumption of premium seafood products such as lobster, whole shrimp, and live seafood.
  • Continued strength in mid-to-high-end demand, with China’s shrimp imports rising about 18% in the first two months of the year.
  • Supply shifts in the live lobster segment, where reduced availability from Canada created opportunities for Vietnamese exporters.

Additionally, Vietnam’s geographical proximity and flexible supply chains allowed businesses to quickly respond to spikes in demand during peak consumption periods.

However, analysts caution that part of this growth reflects seasonal stockpiling rather than sustained long-term demand, highlighting the need to distinguish between temporary and structural growth trends.

Shifts in Export Product Structure

China’s dominance has significantly reshaped Vietnam’s export composition.

  • In the shrimp sector, growth was largely driven by high-value lobster, while whiteleg shrimp—a key product for Western markets—remained relatively flat.
  • Pangasius exports continued to rely heavily on China, helping maintain stable growth despite weaker demand elsewhere.
  • Other categories such as crabs and shellfish also benefited from rising demand across Asian markets.

A notable bright spot was tilapia, with exports expected to reach around $35 million in the first quarter of 2026, a remarkable 190% increase year-on-year, building on $99 million in exports in 2025, which itself marked a 141% jump from 2024.

Rising Risks from Market Dependence

Despite strong short-term gains, Vietnam’s growing reliance on China presents several risks:

  • Policy volatility: Changes in China’s import regulations, quality standards, or border controls could quickly disrupt trade flows.
  • Seasonality: Demand tends to peak early in the year and may weaken in subsequent months as inventories build.
  • Intensifying competition: Countries like Ecuador are increasing pressure, particularly in the price-sensitive whole shrimp segment.

These factors underscore the importance of diversifying export markets to ensure long-term stability.

Other Key Markets Lag Behind

While China surged ahead, other major markets struggled:

  • Exports to the United States fell by more than 10%, impacted by weak demand and regulatory hurdles such as MMPA/COA requirements and anti-dumping duties on shrimp.
  • Shipments to Japan and South Korea also declined by around 10%, reflecting subdued consumer spending.
  • Exports to the European Union remained largely flat, indicating stable but unremarkable demand.

On a more positive note, markets such as ASEAN, Australia, and Taiwan recorded continued growth, supporting efforts to diversify export destinations.

Outlook for Q2: Slower but More Sustainable Growth

Looking ahead to the second quarter of 2026, China and Hong Kong are expected to remain Vietnam’s primary growth drivers, though at a slower pace as seasonal demand fades.

Future growth will depend more on underlying consumer demand and the ability of Vietnamese exporters to maintain competitiveness amid rising global competition.

Key trends expected in Q2 include:

  • Greater emphasis on affordable and convenient seafood products rather than premium seasonal items.
  • Continued reliance on shrimp and pangasius as core export products.
  • Persistent challenges in developed markets like the United States.

Overall, while Vietnam’s seafood exports are projected to maintain positive growth, the trajectory will likely become more balanced and sustainable, with increased focus on market diversification and leveraging logistical and trade advantages under free trade agreements.
