Disrupted shipping routes and rising fuel prices create uncertainty for exporters as the region remains a growing market.

New Zealand’s seafood industry is starting to feel the ripple effects of the latest conflict in the Middle East, as disrupted shipping routes and rising marine fuel prices begin to affect exporters.

According to Seafood New Zealand Chief Executive Lisa Futschek, instability in the region is creating uncertainty across the entire seafood supply chain.

“Unfortunately, the current conflict is disrupting normal shipping routes and port access, which creates a lot of problems for our exporters,” said Futschek.

The Middle East has been a growing market for New Zealand seafood, particularly for premium products. While exports to the region currently total around $20 million per year, industry leaders believe the market holds strong potential for expansion.

That opportunity has been supported by the Free Trade Agreement concluded last year between New Zealand and the Gulf Cooperation Council, which allows seafood exports to enter member countries tariff-free.

However, exporters are already experiencing logistical disruptions.

Tony Hazlett, Chief Executive of Talley’s, said shipments currently in transit have been forced to change course as conditions in the region evolve.

“We have product currently in transit that was originally bound for ports in the Middle East, which has since had to be redirected to different arrival ports,” said Hazlett.

“That creates a lot of challenges for us, from additional freight costs to uncertainty about whether the product can reach the final customer in time.”

Hazlett added that in some cases shipments may have to be returned to New Zealand if delivery becomes impossible.

“In some situations, if the product cannot be delivered, we will have no choice but to return the shipment back to New Zealand. It looks like this will be the case for some of our product already en route.”

At the same time, the conflict has driven a sharp increase in global marine fuel prices, placing additional pressure on seafood operators already working with tight margins.

“The cost of marine fuel has increased sharply since the conflict escalated, which directly impacts the cost of operations in New Zealand,” said Futschek.

“These are costs the industry is having to absorb in the short term, but inevitably they will place pressure on prices that consumers see.”

Despite the disruption, industry leaders say they remain committed to maintaining supply relationships and navigating trade challenges with government support.

“We’re hopeful that stability returns soon but, in the meantime, our officials have been extremely responsive and supportive in assisting the industry with trade access challenges,” Futschek said.

Seafood New Zealand Chief Executive Lisa Futschek
