The evolving dynamics highlight a broader transformation in the global scallop trade

Global Scallop Trade Shifts as U.S. Faces Shortage of Premium Sizes

WORLDWIDE
Monday, March 16, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

Chinese small scallops fill U.S. supply gap while French exports reshape China’s seafood imports

As the U.S. Atlantic scallop fishing season approaches its close, the market is experiencing a pronounced shortage of large-sized scallops, particularly U-10 and 10–20 count varieties. These premium sizes remain highly sought after by wholesale distributors and foodservice operators, keeping prices elevated across the United States seafood market.

Meanwhile, imports of small and medium-sized scallops have become an increasingly important buffer against supply shortages. Among these, shipments from China have emerged as a significant supplemental source, helping stabilize availability for processors and catering businesses.

According to industry sources cited by Food World (Beijing), Chinese suppliers have expanded exports of frozen and dried scallops tailored to U.S. demand. Through grading systems and IQF (Individually Quick Frozen) technology, exporters can deliver consistent volumes in sizes such as 40–60, 60–80, and 80–120 count scallops.

Traders and seafood processors note that these smaller sizes are particularly useful for value-added processing, prepared seafood products, and restaurant applications, helping offset the tight supply of larger scallops harvested domestically.

China’s Import Market Adjusts After Japanese Seafood Ban

While Chinese exports are helping balance supply in the U.S. market, the Chinese seafood industry itself has been undergoing significant sourcing changes.

For many years, Japan served as a major supplier of scallops to China. However, following the Fukushima nuclear wastewater discharge controversy in 2023, China imposed a suspension on Japanese seafood imports, disrupting long-standing supply chains.

The policy shift forced importers and processors to seek alternative sources of premium scallops, prompting a rapid diversification of suppliers.

French Scallops Gain Ground in China

Since 2023, French scallops have increasingly entered the Chinese market, with imports growing at a notable pace. These scallops are valued for their large size, consistent resource management, and well-regulated harvesting practices.

Seafood processors in China have been importing these raw materials for grading, processing, and quick-freezing, allowing them to supply different market segments ranging from high-end domestic retail to potential export channels.

According to the Asia regional head of Yisi International Fisheries, a French scallop exporter, shipments to China have risen significantly in recent years. The company reports that French scallops are gradually replacing Japanese supply in terms of both size availability and quality consistency, helping establish a more stable trade channel.

After processing within China, these scallops can be adapted for a variety of applications, providing traders, processors, and seafood distributors with greater flexibility in responding to shifting market demand.

A Rebalancing Global Supply Chain

The evolving dynamics highlight a broader transformation in the global scallop trade.

Chinese small and medium-sized scallops are playing a critical role in supplementing the U.S. market, particularly as domestic catches of premium sizes tighten toward the end of the fishing season.

At the same time, rising imports of French scallops into China are compensating for the loss of Japanese seafood supplies, strengthening the country’s processing sector and diversifying raw material sources.

Together, these shifts signal a reconfiguration of international scallop supply chains, where China, France, and the United States are increasingly interconnected through changing production patterns, trade policies, and market demand.
