Sector expansion aligns with Oman Vision 2040 as investments, entrepreneurship support, and exports target major global markets while production value surpasses $52.7 million in 2025.

Aquaculture production in Oman experienced a sharp increase in 2025, reaching approximately 9,240 tons, representing a 67.7 percent growth compared to 2024, according to officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.

The total value of the production exceeded $52.7 million (converted from RO 20.3 million), marking a 63.7 percent rise in value compared to the previous year.

Dr. Issa Mohammed Al Farsi, Director of the Aquaculture Development Department at the ministry, said the most widely produced species in the country’s aquaculture sector include whiteleg shrimp and European seabream, followed by tilapia, Omani abalone, and rock oysters.

He explained that the government is implementing a comprehensive strategy to build a competitive and sustainable aquaculture industry aligned with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. The plan focuses on four key pillars: maintaining high international quality standards, ensuring environmental sustainability, encouraging local community participation, and strengthening national food security. The initiative also supports the country’s broader objective of diversifying income sources and expanding non-oil contributions to GDP.

According to Al Farsi, the ministry is also prioritizing support for entrepreneurs interested in integrated aquaculture, a system that combines fish farming with plant cultivation to reduce water consumption and lower emissions. Financial support includes flexible financing packages covering up to 80 percent of project costs through the Development Bank and other institutions. Additional support comes through a clear legislative framework and innovation initiatives such as the “Suggest Your Project” platform, designed to encourage youth entrepreneurship.

On the international front, Omani aquaculture products are targeting major export markets including the European Union, the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, as well as GCC and Arab countries. Compliance with international standards is ensured through the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification system and continuous laboratory testing by the Food Safety and Quality Center.

In addition to expanding production, new investment projects are underway. Al Farsi noted that construction began in February 2025 on a large whiteleg shrimp farming project in the Wilayat of Shinas, located in North Al Batinah Governorate. The project carries an investment of approximately $61 million (converted from RO 23.5 million) and covers 15 hectares.

Once operational, the facility is expected to produce around 7,500 tons of shrimp annually, positioning it among the largest aquaculture ventures in Oman and further strengthening the country’s role in the regional seafood industry.

(Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources)**の当局者が明らかにしたもの。

(People’s Republic of China)大韓民国(Republic of Korea)ロシア連邦(Russian Federation)、さらにGCCおよびアラブ諸国などの主要市場を輸出先としている。
