For fishing, sustainability is not an obligation or a temporary circumstance. It is a consubstantial part of itself. Fishing must be economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. And, to continue being so, take the initiative. One of them is the II Interfish-Spain Congress, which will be held in Vigo on April 12 and 13 at the Afundación Headquarters under the title “Sustainability in the Surface Longline Fishery”. A rigorous approach from five prisms: the administrations, the fisheries themselves, science, distribution and food interprofessionals. Everything from an international perspective, with specialists from Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

The congress will begin with an analysis of the role of the administrations, with representation from the Xunta de Galicia (Antonio Basanta, General Director of Fisheries of the Consellería do Mar), the Ministries of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Mónica Corrales, from the General Secretariat of Fisheries) and Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge of the Spanish government (María Jesús Rodríguez de Sancho), as well as the Ministry of the Sea of the Portuguese government (Isabel Ventura).

Previously, Mayor Abel Caballero, Regional Minister Rosa Quintana, Secretary General for Fisheries Isabel Artime and Secretary of State for Fisheries Teresa Coelho will star in the opening ceremony of the international symposium organized by Interfish Spain and whose welcome will be given by its president, Juan Carlos Martin Fragueiro.

On the same afternoon of the 12th, the fisheries themselves will talk about their present and their ideas for the future. Representatives of the association of traders and processors of migratory species (Anecteam), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) and the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership will take part in the second panel discussion of this first day.

On the morning of the 13th, science, distribution and interprofessionals will take center stage. The first aspect will be dealt with by the heads of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) and representatives of the Basque AZTI foundation and the British Sea Plus Plus foundation. The opinion of the distributors will be presented by the retailers of fish and frozen foods (Fedepesca), El Corte Inglés and Mercadona. Finally, it will be the turn of the interprofessional organizations that bring together the entire production line, with the voice of dairy (InLac), that of wine (OIVE) and the communication area through two great experts in the dissemination of knowledge sectoral and scientific.

The conclusions will be presented, as a climax, by Gabriel Ocaña, legal advisor of Interfish Spain. In total, more than seven hours and more than 20 speakers to achieve excellence in the sustainability of surface longlining. Vigo, once again, will be an anchoring port to protect itself and leave with a better sea for the future.
