Supply Crunch Pushes Bigeye to 25-Year Peak as Bluefin Market Defies Off-Season Slowdown

In the 7th week of 2026 (February 9–15), the tuna market at Tokyo’s Toyosu Market recorded another sharp price surge, driven by persistent supply shortages. According to Food World, premium frozen bigeye tuna prices have reached their highest level since records began in 2001, while domestically produced wild bluefin tuna continued to command strong prices despite the traditional seasonal lull.

Frozen Bigeye Tuna Breaks 25-Year Record

Market data show that during Week 7, the low-end auction price for large frozen bigeye tuna weighing over 40 kg stood at ¥1,090/kg (US$7.27/kg, tax included), slightly lower than the previous week.

However, the high-end price climbed to ¥1,464/kg (US$9.76/kg, tax included) — setting a new record high since 2001.

The primary driver behind the surge is a dramatic contraction in supply. In January 2026, total arrivals of large frozen bigeye (over 40 kg) in Japan dropped to just 6,060 fish, representing a 36% year-on-year decline.

Industry sources noted that the prolonged weakness of the Japanese yen and rising operating costs in the second half of 2025 significantly dampened overseas longline fishing activity, directly compressing raw material supply.

In the Eastern Pacific, the median price for large bigeye climbed to ¥1,362/kg (US$9.08/kg) — up 28% year-on-year and the highest level in at least a decade. Traditionally, prices peak at year-end before softening after the Lunar New Year. This year, however, persistently low inventories and limited auction volumes have prevented any meaningful correction.

Regional Price Breakdown (Frozen Bigeye, Excluding Tax)

  • Eastern Pacific (Seikei):

    • High-end: ¥2,500/kg (US$16.67/kg)

    • Low-end: ¥1,100/kg (US$7.33/kg) — highest level since Week 47

  • Atlantic:

    • High-end: ¥1,600–1,800/kg (US$10.67–12.00/kg) — slightly down week-on-week

  • Indian Ocean:

    • High-end: ¥1,400–1,800/kg (US$9.33–12.00/kg) — price band narrowing

Market participants expect shipments of Atlantic frozen bigeye and Irish bluefin to begin arriving in March, though tight supply conditions are likely to persist in the short term.

Domestic Wild Bluefin Defies Off-Season

Fresh domestic wild bluefin tuna also performed strongly during Week 7.

The average auction price for high-grade tuna weighing over 40 kg reached ¥9,400/kg (US$62.67/kg, tax included) — up approximately 15% week-on-week.

Bluefin longline catches from Aomori continued to dominate the premium segment, with significant price volatility for individual fish:

  • Tuesday peak: ¥10,000/kg (US$66.67/kg)

  • Thursday single-fish auction: ¥11,500/kg (US$76.67/kg)

  • Friday record transaction: ¥13,500/kg (US$90.00/kg)

However, sharp differences were observed across fishing methods and regions:

  • Handline-caught large fish in Aomori peaked at only ¥3,500/kg (US$23.33/kg) — sharply lower than the previous week.

  • Longline catches from Hokkaido were limited in volume, but select high-quality specimens exceeded ¥12,000/kg (US$80.00/kg).

  • Fixed-net catches along the Sea of Japan coast were mostly small-sized, trading at ¥2,000–3,000/kg (US$13.33–20.00/kg).

  • Purse seine catches fluctuated between ¥1,800–4,000/kg (US$12.00–26.67/kg), with some lots reportedly unsold.

Imported fresh fish remained scarce. Bigeye tuna from the Marshall Islands traded at ¥1,300–1,500/kg (US$8.67–10.00/kg), reflecting limited demand for imported fresh products.

Frozen Bluefin Market Remains Stable

The frozen bluefin segment showed relative stability:

  • High-end Japanese longline products (Irish-origin waters) held at ¥4,500–5,500/kg (US$30.00–36.67/kg, excluding tax).

  • Mediterranean (Spanish) fillets traded at ¥4,200–4,400/kg (US$28.00–29.33/kg) with minimal fluctuation.

Arrivals of Southern Bluefin declined slightly, averaging 113–141 large fish per day. High-end prices widened to ¥3,300–5,000/kg (US$22.00–33.33/kg), indicating sustained bargaining power for premium-quality fish.

Supply Constraints Dictate Market Dynamics

The current price formation mechanism at Toyosu Market is clearly dominated by supply contraction.

Bigeye tuna prices have surged from a low of ¥1,120/kg (US$7.47/kg) in Week 30 of 2025 to today’s record highs, underscoring the strong elasticity effect created by tightening supply.

As additional shipments are expected in March, market attention will turn to the pace of restocking and the strength of consumer demand recovery. Until then, Japan’s high-end sashimi market is likely to remain characterized by “low volume and high prices,” according to Food World.

    • 上限:¥1,400–1,800/kg(US$9.33–12.00/kg)

  • 木曜日単一魚¥11,500/kg(US$76.67/kg)

  • 金曜日最高取引¥13,500/kg(US$90.00/kg)

日本海沿岸の定置網は**¥2,000–3,000/kg(US$13.33–20.00/kg)**。

マーシャル諸島産メバチは**¥1,300–1,500/kg(US$8.67–10.00/kg)**。

  • 日本延縄(アイルランド海域):¥4,500–5,500/kg(US$30.00–36.67/kg)

  • 地中海(スペイン):¥4,200–4,400/kg(US$28.00–29.33/kg)

  • ミナミマグロ:¥3,300–5,000/kg(US$22.00–33.33/kg)
