Strong Roe Content and High-Quality Catch Signal Promising Season for Iceland’s Capelin Fleet

The Icelandic pelagic vessel Beitir NK arrived at its home port in Neskaupstaður on the morning of February 13 carrying 850 tons of capelin, marking one of the most notable landings of the current season.

According to information from AUÐLINDIN, Captain Ólafur Gunnar Guðnason described the catch as exceptional. “These are the most beautiful capelin we have seen this season, and the roe content is now at 17%,” he said, highlighting the high quality of the fish destined for export.

Caught in Two Casts off Hjörleifshöfði

The catch was secured in just two casts off Hjörleifshöfði on Iceland’s south coast.

  • The first cast yielded 450 tons, with approximately 60% roe content.

  • The second cast brought in 400 tons, with 40% roe content.

“This is spawning capelin that will be processed for production in Japan,” said Captain Guðnason, referring to the strong demand in the Japanese market for high-quality roe, known as masago. Icelandic capelin roe is a valuable export commodity, widely used in sushi and other seafood products.

Processing at Síldarvinnslan

Landings from Beitir NK began the same evening at the processing facilities of Síldarvinnslan in Neskaupstaður. The company is one of Iceland’s leading seafood processors and exporters, specializing in pelagic species such as capelin, herring, and mackerel.

Another vessel, Barði NK, is also currently landing capelin at the plant, underscoring the intensity of activity during the peak of the capelin season.

Fleet Fishing Across a Wide Area

Captain Guðnason noted that the capelin fleet has been operating across a broad stretch of fishing grounds. “The fleet has been fishing over a considerable area, all the way east under Alviðra. On our way east, we saw quite a lot of capelin — for example, there was a significant amount off Ingólfshöfði,” he explained.

The wide distribution of capelin is viewed as a positive sign for the remainder of the season. Iceland’s capelin fishery is strictly regulated through quotas set by marine scientists and authorities, as the species plays a crucial ecological role in the North Atlantic ecosystem, serving as a key food source for cod, seabirds, and marine mammals.

Net Repairs and Optimism for the Season

Upon arrival in Neskaupstaður, crew members coordinated with Hampiðjan specialists to repair a fishing net that was slightly torn during operations. Despite the minor setback, optimism remains high among crews and processors alike.

“I think people are looking forward to the continuation of this season,” said Captain Guðnason.

With strong roe percentages, solid catches, and steady demand from the Japanese market, Iceland’s capelin fleet appears poised for a productive and economically significant season.

Hjörleifshöfði

Síldarvinnslan
