US and Brazil Drive Record Growth as Industry Eyes Fiercer EU Competition in 2026

Vietnam's tilapia fillet exports are on track for a breakthrough year in 2025 , with total export turnover surpassing USD 99 million , underscoring the species' increasingly important role in the country's seafood portfolio.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) , fillets and processed fish meat products generated approximately USD 61 million , accounting for 61% of total tilapia export value. This confirms fillets as the leading product segment within Vietnam's tilapia industry.

United States Remains Largest Market

The United States continues to dominate as Vietnam's largest importer of tilapia fillets in 2025 , with export turnover reaching USD 40 million —a dramatic 499% increase compared to 2024 .

Industry analysts attribute this surge to strong American demand amid supply challenges faced by competing producers, particularly the United States and China , where tariffs and rising production costs have disrupted output. The supply gap has created favorable conditions for Vietnamese exporters to expand their footprint in the US market.

Brazil Emerges as Fastest-Growing Destination

Brazil has become the standout growth market in 2025 , with Vietnamese tilapia fillet exports projected to hit USD 11 million , marking an extraordinary 7,552% increase year-on-year.

The rapid expansion highlights the vast potential of the South American market, particularly in domestic consumption and food processing sectors. Industry observers note that frozen tilapia fillets are gaining traction among Brazilian distributors seeking reliable import sources.

Declines in Russia and Mexico

In contrast to strong growth in the Americas, exports to Russia and Mexico are expected to decline by 29% and 38%, respectively, in 2025.

Importers in these markets are reportedly exercising caution due to economic volatility, rising logistics costs, and increased competition from domestic and regional suppliers.

Stable Growth in Asia and Europe

In Asia, Taiwan and Japan maintained relatively stable import demand.

  • Exports to Taiwan reached USD 1.5 million, up 123% compared to 2024.

  • Shipments to Japan totaled USD 312,000, reflecting a modest 2% increase year-on-year.

In Europe, Italy recorded encouraging growth of 54%, with export value exceeding USD 601,000, indicating sustained demand for Vietnamese tilapia fillets in the European market.

Expansion Into the Middle East and Niche Markets

Exports to Saudi Arabia and Puerto Rico posted new or significantly higher values in 2025, reflecting Vietnam’s expanding presence in Middle Eastern and niche markets.

Meanwhile, Qatar, despite experiencing a slight 11% decrease, remains among the top 10 largest importers of Vietnamese tilapia fillets.

Outlook for 2026: Opportunities and Competitive Pressures

With robust growth in 2025, particularly in the United States and Brazil, tilapia fillets are emerging as a strategic export product alongside Vietnam’s flagship pangasius industry.

Looking ahead to 2026, industry leaders emphasize that market diversification, enhanced processing quality, and compliance with food safety and sustainability standards will be critical to sustaining momentum.

However, competition in the European Union (EU) is expected to intensify, especially from Brazil, whose tilapia sector is actively pursuing EU market expansion to offset barriers in the U.S. market. Backed by large-scale farming operations, consistent product quality, and strong compliance with stringent EU technical and traceability requirements, Brazilian tilapia is poised to become a direct competitor to Vietnamese exports in the region.

To remain competitive, Vietnamese enterprises will need to strengthen supply chain control, invest in value-added processing, and maintain rigorous sustainability certifications to secure and expand market share in the EU and other high-standard markets worldwide.

To remain competitive, Vietnamese businesses need to strengthen supply chain management, invest in value-added processing, and continuously comply with stringent sustainability certifications in order to consolidate and expand their market share in the EU and other high-standard markets.
