Tuesday, February 10, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

Less herring from the north, blue whiting fishing underway in the west

Seasonal shifts are reshaping pelagic fisheries, with reduced herring activity, a cautious start to blue whiting, modest mackerel landings, and sprat catches in the Baltic.

NVG Herring

As expected, weekly volumes declined last week. From 23 vessels, a total of 19,300 tonnes has been reported. Foreign vessels contributed the majority, landing 12,000 tonnes, with the largest single catch exceeding 2,500 tonnes. These vessels are from the Faroe Islands and Scotland, operating under rights to fish herring in Norwegian waters.
Among Norwegian vessels, the trawler group landed 3,000 tonnes, coastal vessels 2,800 tonnes, and purse seiners 1,500 tonnes.

The herring is moving slowly and is holding unusually far north for February. Fishing activity has taken place from the mouth of Sørøysundet westwards to north of Malangsgrunnen.

There is still wide variation in size this week. The largest average weight is 290 g, the smallest 190 g, with a weighted average of 262 g. Feedback from buyers indicates the herring still has some way to go before roe maturity. Fat content has dropped significantly in some catches, prompting several processors to switch to “flaps” filleting instead of skinless fillets.

The winter herring season has been exceptionally strong, with 195,000 tonnes caught so far. Of this, foreign vessels have landed just under 50,000 tonnes. This is welcome news for the onshore processing industry, which expects reduced supplies of other species in 2026. By comparison, 113,000 tonnes were landed in the first quarter last year.

Herring activity is expected to decline significantly in the coming period, with few vessels remaining on the fishing grounds.

Blue Whiting

February is typically one of the best months for blue whiting. The season has started quietly, with just 9,800 tonnes landed last week. Of this, seven vessels caught 6,900 tonnes along the northern edge of the Porcupine Bank in the EU zone. These catches were sold for human consumption to buyers in Killybegs.

Two vessels reported 2,900 tonnes taken just outside the 200-nautical-mile limit west of Ireland. The vessels searched for blue whiting in international waters for several days before locating fish over the weekend—four days later than last year. They are also observing good concentrations east of the boundary, where the stock typically moves westward across the line.

A significant increase in vessel arrivals is expected in the blue whiting areas in the coming weeks, and the industry is hoping for good availability and favorable weather in the Atlantic.

Mackerel

On Monday, quota increases came into effect for several fleet groups. 180 tonnes were reported from “Østerbris”, while the Northern Irish vessel “Voyager” landed 630 tonnes. Both catches were taken southwest of Shetland. Mackerel sizes varied, with average weights ranging from 300 g to 435 g.

Voyager” also landed 390 tonnes of North Sea herring, with an average weight of 230 g.

Sprat

In the Baltic Sea, the vessel “Astrid Marie” has been fishing sprat, reporting 1,350 tonnes on Saturday. The fishery took place between Sweden and Estonia, and the catch will be delivered for meal and oil production.

Killybegs

(Sprat)
