The Organization of Mussel Producers of Galicia (Opmega) brings the voice of its associates to the forums and institutions where decisions related to their activity are adopted. Thus, three of its representatives landed in Brussels to maintain an intense agenda of meetings with MEPs and senior officials from different organizations related to aquaculture.

With this objective, the three-day trip to the Belgian capital of the delegation headed by the president of Opmega, Ricardo Herbón; the vice president, Juan Fungueiriño; and the manager, Lino Suárez. There they held meetings with senior community leaders such as the head of the DG Mare Aquaculture Unit, Felix Leinemann; the head of the Nature Working Group of the Committee of the Regions, Serafino Nardi; or the technical secretary of the European Aquaculture Advisory Council, Cécile Fouquet. In relation to the latter, Opmega is immersed in the process to be part of this body and thus learn first-hand about the directives or regulations related to its activity during its processing, which will allow it to have very valuable information for the organization and its partners.

In addition, the Opmega board of directors held meetings with the Galician MEPs Francisco Millán Mon (PP) and Ana Miranda (BNG), both of whom are very knowledgeable about the activity of the mussel sector, its importance in Galicia and their work in favor of the shellfish promotion. The scheduled meeting with PNV MEP Izaskun Bilbao, also a member of the European Parliament Fisheries Committee, was rescheduled to be held remotely.

To all his interlocutors, the president and vice-president of Opmega sent an invitation on behalf of all his associates to get to know "in situ" the activity he carries out in the Galician estuaries and the particularities of mussel farming, his work in favor of the sustainability and its capacity to generate wealth and employment. Likewise, Ricardo Herbón reported the problems that the sector is going through due to the new regulations for collecting the cheek, which endangers the future activity of many Galician producers.

After three days of intense meetings, Opmega increased a tasting in the community capital for which it had the collaboration of the executive chef of the Eurostarts Montgomery Hotel, who presented six different dishes made with mussels. Half a hundred people gathered at the event, which was attended, among others, by the former Minister of the Interior of Spain between 2016 and 2018, Juan Ignacio Zoido, who declared himself in love with the "black gold" of the Galician estuaries, as well as representatives of different community administrations and FAO.
