Development Exchange Conference took place in Guiping City, Guangxi, co-organized by national and regional agricultural authorities.

The event brought together academicians, industry experts, and fishery leaders to discuss the advancement and sustainability of the rice-fish culture industry.

Key Presentations and Insights:

  • Gui Jianfang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences highlighted the 3,000-year history of rice-fish farming, citing examples like the Qingtian rice-fish symbiotic system and the Huzhou mulberry-based fish pond system, recognized globally by the FAO. He underscored the system’s contribution to rural revitalization, promoting ecological agriculture and innovation in breeding technology.

Gui Jianfang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, delivered a report entitled "From Rice-Fish Farming to Ecological Agriculture"

  • Chen Jiayong from the National Aquatic Technology Extension Station provided data on China’s 2023 integrated rice-fish farming, covering 44.9 million mu and producing 4.17 million tons of aquatic products. He detailed the prominence of rice-shrimp farming, which accounts for 56.37% of the area, and described its evolution into more sophisticated, sustainable models. He emphasized regional policies and technological integration for future industry consolidation and growth.

Chen Jiayong, deputy director of the National Aquatic Technology Extension Center, made an analysis report on the development of China's integrated rice-fish farming industry

  • He Jianguo, a shrimp and crab industry expert, discussed crayfish farming, noting production of 3 million tons in 2023 and four significant challenges, including disease and breeding techniques. Advances in seed transportation, breeding technologies, and nutrition management were outlined to support industry growth.

He Jianguo, chief scientist of the National Shrimp and Crab Industry Technology System of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and director of the Institute of Aquatic Economic Animals of Sun Yat-sen University, gave a report entitled "Discussion on Four Issues in the Development of Crayfish Breeding Industry"

  • Chen Xin from Zhejiang University elaborated on the Guangxi Northwest Mountain Rice-Fish Complex System, an ecologically sustainable agricultural heritage that enhances resource efficiency and farmer income. This model, using methods like ridge rice-ditch breeding and rice-lamp-fish-mushroom combinations, showcases southwestern mountain agriculture’s unique traits and economic benefits.

Professor Chen Xin from Zhejiang University gave a report on "Important Agricultural Cultural Heritage Rice-Fish Symbiosis System"

  • Cheng Yongxu of Shanghai Ocean University presented on three-dimensional rice-fish farming’s impact on food security, ecological balance, and farmer prosperity. The symbiotic system ensures efficient rice and aquatic product yields while enhancing soil and environmental health. This model integrates modern science with traditional practices, fostering rural development and supporting “rice-fish leisure tourism.”

Cheng Yongxu, professor of Shanghai Ocean University and director of the Key Laboratory of Integrated Rice-Fish Farming Ecology of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, delivered a report on "The Development and Cultural Construction of Rice-Fish Industry".
