Pilar Carracelas and Rebeca Filgueira, Leaders Who Unite Armatorial Tradition with Innovation and Equality in the Canning Industry

Next Thursday, October 23, Vigo will host the XI edition of the Xornadas Divulgativas sobre o Papel da Muller no Sector Pesqueiro e Conserveiro (SEREAS Conferences on the Role of Women in the Fishing and Canning Sector). The event, which will take place at the Verbum Museum starting at 10:30 a.m., seeks to recognize and raise awareness of the crucial contribution of women across the entire value chain of the Galician marine industry.

The conferences are promoted by FUNDAMAR and FUNPROMAR, in collaboration with the Equality Council (Concellería de Igualdade) of the Vigo City Council (Concello de Vigo).

Two Stories of Leadership: Sea and Business

This edition will highlight two figures who embody female leadership in complementary areas:

  1. Pilar Carracelas (Shipowner/Armadora): Representing the historic vessel "Loitador" from Cangas, Carracelas has managed a family business for nearly four decades. She symbolizes the strength, resilience, and continuity of the deep-sea fishing tradition.

  2. Rebeca Filgueira (HR Director): As the Human Resources Director at Nauterra, Filgueira brings a contemporary vision focused on sustainability, diversity, and equal opportunities within the canning industry.

Women at the Center: Creation, Memory, and Heritage

The program will conclude with the panel discussion "Women at the Center: Creation, Memory, and Sea," which will connect art and maritime heritage through the female perspective:

  • Lorena Rosende (EMRA): Will present an international collaboration model that networks female artisans and artists worldwide.

  • Amalia Puga (Proxecto Bolina): Will showcase her work with the redeiras da Atalaia de A Guarda (net-makers), transforming the craftsmanship of Galician fishing nets into contemporary design pieces.

  • Paula Cabaleiro: Will present "O mar tamén é noso" (The Sea Is Ours Too), a curatorial project that links female memory with the contemporary scene of Vigo through audiovisual creation and citizen participation alongside artist Alicia Framis.

The SEREAS Conferences are established as a vital platform for preserving the memory of women of the sea and projecting their legacy toward the future of the sector.
