Fisheries Report: NVG Herring Arrives from the North; Mackerel Fishing Challenged by Weather
This weekend saw the first reports of Norwegian Spring-Spawning (NVG) Herring arriving from the north, while the North Sea was largely dominated by poor weather, which complicated fishing activities.

The vessel "Zenit" was the first to report catches of NVG herring from the north this autumn, closely followed by another Karmøy-based boat, "Vikingbank".

Total Reported Catch: 2,230 tonnes of NVG herring were reported on Sunday.

Catch Area: Catches were primarily taken from the area immediately west of Sørøya (in Northern Norway).

Fish Size: The average weight of the herring varied between 235 and 322 grams per haul.
Mackerel

Poor weather conditions significantly affected the mackerel fishery in the North Sea throughout the week, making operations challenging.

Total Reported Catch: Despite the weather, a total of 8,044 tonnes of mackerel were reported for the week.

Peak Days: The best fishing days were Saturday and Sunday, when the weather improved: 1,744 tonnes on Saturday and a massive 3,260 tonnes on Sunday.

Notable Catch: The new vessel "Knester" made a strong debut, reporting 385 tonnes of mackerel on its first trip Saturday evening.

Fleet Activity: A total of 38 vessels were active (34 Norwegian and four foreign).

Catch Area and Size: Catches were taken in the British zone with an average weight between 420 and 505 grams.

Coastal Mackerel: Coastal activity was quiet, with only one reported catch of 8 tonnes by "Johlena" on Wednesday.
Coastal Sprat (Kystbrisling)

Total Reported Catch: Four catches of coastal sprat totaling 50 tonnes were reported last week.

Catch Area: Three catches came from the Hardangerfjorden, while one large sprat catch was taken in Rogaland.
