VALLETTA – Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Friday that the partnership between Malta and China continues to strengthen, with more cooperation anticipated in the coming years. Abela made the statement during the inauguration ceremony for the first bluefin tuna joint venture platform between the two nations, held in Marsa, eastern Malta, Xinhua reports.

Emphasizing the robust economic ties between the countries, Abela remarked, “For over five decades, our partnership has deepened through mutual benefit and win-win cooperation.” He highlighted that this new joint venture signifies a "significant milestone" in the long-standing Malta-China relationship and opens "another promising chapter" in their bilateral trade relations.

The platform, established by Malta Fish Farming (MFF) Ltd. and China's Shandong Far-sea Development Ltd., a subsidiary of Shandong Marine Group, was launched in June in Hainan Province. It spans the entire industrial chain, including the trade, processing, and transportation of bluefin tuna, underscoring the importance of blue economy collaboration.

Abela also noted that this initiative represents not only economic cooperation but also the enduring strength of ties between Malta and China. "We look forward to a future filled with opportunity, prosperity, and further collaboration," he said.

Peng Yijun, charge d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Malta, echoed Abela's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of economic and trade cooperation in China-Malta relations. He stated that these ties have endured over 52 years of diplomatic relations, rooted in mutual benefit and delivering tangible results for both nations.

Salvu Ellul, chairman of MFF, remarked that the joint venture is the product of ongoing governmental exchanges and consensus on developing the blue economy. He expressed confidence that MFF would deliver the highest quality bluefin tuna to Chinese consumers, further solidifying the partnership.
