World Food Network cites GSMC projections pointing to Ecuador-led growth and rising black tiger shrimp output

HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA — Global farmed shrimp production is forecast to reach 6.34 million metric tons in 2026, representing a 4% increase, or approximately 300,000 metric tons, according to data and industry analysis published by World Food Network, following the Global Seafood Market Conference (GSMC) hosted by the National Fisheries Institute (NFI).

According to World Food Network, members of the shrimp industry panel at GSMC projected that global output will rise from approximately 6.145 million tons in 2025 to 6.34 million tons in 2026, driven primarily by expanding production in Ecuador and continued strength in key Asian farming regions.

Industry Leaders Detail Production Outlook

During the conference, Robins McIntosh, Vice President of Thailand-based Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF), presented updated forecasts for the combined farmed production of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon).

As cited by World Food Network, McIntosh stated that:

  • Ecuador’s shrimp production is expected to increase to 1.75 million tons in 2026, setting a new historical record.

  • China’s shrimp output is projected to reach 1.55 million tons, including around 180,000 tons of black tiger shrimp.

  • India’s production is expected to remain largely unchanged in 2026, staying in line with 2025 volumes, before returning to growth in 2027.

McIntosh emphasized that Ecuador will account for the majority of global production growth, while India’s recovery is expected to be more gradual.

Looking Ahead to 2027

According to projections shared at GSMC and reported by World Food Network:

  • If Ecuador’s rapid expansion continues, its shrimp production could reach 2 million tons in 2027.

  • India is forecast to resume growth in 2027, with output increasing by around 6% to approximately 990,000 tons, including 540,000 tons of whiteleg shrimp.

Black Tiger Shrimp Enters High-Growth Phase

McIntosh also highlighted a shift in species dynamics, noting that black tiger shrimp production is entering a high-growth phase. Global output of black tiger shrimp is expected to exceed 600,000 tons in 2026, supported by improved farm management, disease control, and renewed demand for larger shrimp sizes.

“I expect the global production growth trend to continue, with the only limiting factor being market demand,” McIntosh said, as reported by World Food Network.

Market Balance Remains Key

While production forecasts remain positive, analysts cited by World Food Network cautioned that market demand, pricing pressure, and trade conditions—particularly in the United States, China, and the European Union—will play a decisive role in determining profitability across the global shrimp sector.

World Food Network
