Rosrybolovstvo publishes operational data showing strong fishing activity across key basins

According to the latest data from the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo) industry monitoring system, the total catch of aquatic bioresources by all Russian users since the beginning of 2026 has reached 220.7 thousand tonnes . The figures reflect fishing results across Russia's main fishery basins and operations beyond national waters.

According to current data as of January 19, the overall utilization rate of Primorsky Krai's refrigeration facilities for storing fish products was 32%. Forty-two vessels with over 45,000 tons of fish products on board approaching were ports.

Far Eastern Fishery Basin

The Far Eastern fishery basin remains the core of Russia's fishing industry, accounting for 197.5 thousand tonnes of the total catch. The main species harvested include:

  • Pollock122.6 thousand tons

  • Cod6.3 thousand tonnes

  • Pacific herring58.5 thousand tons

The Far East traditionally provides the bulk of Russia's marine fish production, supported by large stocks and an established industrial fleet.

Northern Fishery Basin

In the Northern fishery basin , fishermen harvested 14.3 thousand tons , representing an increase of 24.3% compared with the same period in 2025 . Key species include:

  • Cod6.5 thousand tonnes

  • Haddock4.2 thousand tonnes , which is 2.1 thousand tonnes more than in 2025

The growth reflects favorable fishing conditions and stable stocks in northern waters, including the Barents Sea .

Western Fishery Basin

The Western fishery basin recorded a catch of 3.9 thousand tons , up 67.7% year on year. The main species caught were:

  • Sprat2.9 thousand tonnes , an increase of 1.8 thousand tonnes compared with 2025

  • Baltic herring1 thousand tons

The sharp increase indicates improved fishing efficiency and favorable conditions in the Baltic Sea .

Azov–Black Sea Fishery Basin

In the Azov–Black Sea basin , total catches reached 1.4 thousand tonnes . The dominant species was:

  • Anchovy1.3 thousand tons

The basin traditionally focuses on small pelagic species that are important for regional processing and consumption.

Volga–Caspian Fishery Basin

The Volga–Caspian fishery basin reported a total catch of 2.2 thousand tonnes , entirely consisting of:

  • Sprat2.2 thousand tonnes

This highlights the continued role of inland and Caspian fisheries in supplying local markets.

Foreign Exclusive Economic Zones and the Open Ocean

Russian fishing vessels operating in the exclusive economic zones of foreign states , conventional fishing areas , and the open part of the World Ocean harvested an additional 1.4 thousand tonnes of aquatic bioresources.

Industry Context

While early-year figures show growth in several basins, industry analysts note ongoing challenges related to quota reductions for certain species, particularly cod , whose allowable catch levels in 2026 are among the lowest in decades following international stock assessments. At the same time, Russia has fully transitioned to satellite domestic monitoring systems for its fishing fleet as of 1 January 2026 , strengthening regulatory oversight and technological independence in the sector.
