Market activity remained weak, leading traders to cut prices to speed up inventory clearance.

Weak demand continues to pressure Southeast Pacific squid, while improved catches in the Southwest Atlantic lift sentiment and halt price declines.

During the third week of 2026 (January 9–15), China’s domestic deep-sea squid market remained under pressure overall, but with clear regional divergence. Peruvian squid from the Southeast Pacific continued to see falling prices amid sluggish trading, while Argentine squid from waters outside the Southwest Atlantic benefited from sharply improved catches, prompting a modest price recovery. Market attention is increasingly shifting toward the South American main fishing grounds, according to Food World (Beijing).

Peruvian squid: Sluggish trading, prices continue to bottom out

In the third week of 2026, transaction activity for Peruvian squid at the Zhejiang Agricultural Center dropped sharply. Only 29 tons of small-sized squid were traded, at 15,200 yuan per ton (approximately US$2,110/ton).

Price quotations showed broad declines across categories:

  • Large-headed and tail-fin (large ear) squid fell by more than 2,000 yuan/ton (≈ US$280/ton)

  • Large whole squid declined by 1,800 yuan/ton (≈ US$250/ton)

  • Small and medium whole squid, slices, and carcasses dropped by 500–950 yuan/ton (≈ US$70–130/ton)

Market activity remained weak, with traders cutting prices to accelerate inventory clearance. Downstream processing plants showed limited buying interest and continued to operate with low inventory levels, keeping overall demand subdued and leaving little room for short-term price recovery.

On the supply side, data from the Peruvian Ministry of Production indicated that the first post–New Year landings had arrived at ports. While squid sizes were larger than average, total landings declined. High-seas fishing operations remained stable, with average daily catches of 4–8 tons per vessel and a cumulative catch of about 1,550–1,600 tons.

Meanwhile, data from the Weihai International Marine Commodities Exchange Center showed that prices for Peruvian equatorial squid edged up slightly during the week, but overall levels remained depressed.

Argentine squid: Improved catches drive price recovery

In contrast, Argentine squid fishing entered a phase of rapid growth. Although no spot transactions were recorded at the Zhejiang Agricultural Center during the third week, quotation prices for medium- and large-sized squid increased by 500–750 yuan/ton (≈ US$70–105/ton).

Since the start of the Argentine squid fishing season, fleets have identified large, high-quality squid schools in waters north of 49°S latitude. Single-vessel daily catches reached up to 70 tons, dominated by S-sized squid with body thickness of 3.5–4.1 mm, firm flesh, and consistent quality.

In high-seas fishing areas, average daily catches last week were 1–5 tons per vessel, with a cumulative catch of around 30 tons. According to the Weihai International Marine Commodities Exchange Center, prices for several Argentine squid sizes rose slightly during the third week, signaling a more stable market outlook.

Other regions and trade dynamics

Prices for squid from the Northwest Pacific and the Indian Ocean remained largely stable. During the third week, the volume of domestically caught squid entering Zhoushan Port continued to decline, although overall inventories stayed high.

Trade data underline the mixed market fundamentals. In the first 11 months of 2025, China’s imports of cuttlefish and squid products reached US$1.626 billion, up 46% year on year, with import volumes rising 38% to 474,500 tons. By contrast, exports totaled 451,700 tons, down 9% year on year, while export value fell 10%, reflecting persistently weak overseas demand.

Market outlook

Overall, the domestic deep-sea squid market in the third week of 2026 showed a clear pattern of “weak Peru, stable Argentina.”
Peruvian squid prices continued to slide under weak demand, while Argentine squid prices stabilized and rebounded on the back of stronger catches. As a result, market focus is gradually shifting toward the South Atlantic’s main fishing grounds.
