Fuel Surge Sends Global Tuna Market Into Turbulence as Bangkok Prices Climb

Wednesday, April 08, 2026, 01:00 (GMT + 9)

Rising oil costs and geopolitical tensions tighten supply chains, widening price gaps between Asia and South America

The global skipjack tuna market came under intensified pressure during week 14 (March 30 – April 5), as surging fuel prices and ongoing supply chain disruptions pushed costs higher across major trading hubs—most notably in Bangkok, Thailand, as reported by Food World (Beijing).

Trading activity for whole frozen skipjack tuna on a CFR (Cost and Freight) basis in Bangkok remains active, though increasingly uneven. Large-scale buyers are leveraging their purchasing power to secure lower-priced contracts, while small and medium-sized canneries are facing sharply higher procurement costs, often forced to buy at the top end of the price range.

At the heart of this widening price gap is the rapid increase in fuel costs. Offshore fishing operations rely heavily on fuel, meaning rising oil prices translate directly into higher operating expenses for fleets—and ultimately, more expensive raw materials. Market insiders suggest that if oil prices remain elevated, skipjack tuna prices could rise by an additional $50 per ton in week 15.

Oil market volatility has been closely tied to developments in the Middle East, particularly following remarks by Donald Trump on April 2 regarding tensions with Iran. Continued uncertainty, combined with concerns over shipping risks in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, has driven international crude oil prices upward, with cascading effects on the global seafood trade.

The shipping industry is also feeling the strain. AP Moller-Maersk has identified soaring marine gas oil prices as a primary driver of cost increases, noting that tuna is among the most fuel-sensitive seafood products, making it especially vulnerable to these fluctuations.

On the supply side, activity in the Indian Ocean remains steady. In the Seychelles, skipjack tuna prices have risen to approximately $1,590–$1,630 per ton (converted from €1,465–€1,500), with multiple refrigerated vessels departing for destinations including Thailand, Turkey, and Mauritius. Meanwhile, shipments of yellowfin tuna are continuing toward Spain.

In contrast, the South American market is showing a different trajectory. In Port Manta, Ecuador, ex-vessel prices for skipjack tuna remained largely stable during week 14, though trading activity shifted toward the lower end of the previous week’s range—suggesting continued tight supply without corresponding price increases.

As a result, the pricing gap between Bangkok and South America has widened further, with Asian market prices now significantly exceeding those in Ecuador, underscoring the uneven global impact of fuel-driven cost pressures.
