Global raw material tightness and high international demand push prices for both species to unprecedented levels during July

OSLO — Norwegian seafood exports recorded an extraordinary performance in the pelagic sector during the month of July, driven primarily by record prices and significant increases in exported volumes of herring and mackerel, according to data released by the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Herring Reaches Record Price in Tight Global Market

In the herring sector, Norway exported 11,016 tonnes of seafood worth a total of NOK 234 million (US$ 22.23 million) during July. These figures represent a growth of 28 percent in export value — equivalent to an increase of NOK 51 million (US$ 4.85 million) — compared to the same month last year. Concurrently, the physical volume exported experienced a 16 percent rise.

The market saw a historic milestone for frozen whole herring, reaching a record average price of 21 kroner per kg (US$ 2.00 per kg) in July, surpassing by 1 krone (US$ 0.10) the previous record set in June 2024. The main commercial destinations for this resource in July were Poland, Denmark, and Canada.

"The value growth for herring in July is due to both increased export volumes and record high prices. A tight global market for pelagic fish and record high prices for frozen whole herring contributed to a significant increase in export value in July. At the same time, increased availability of raw material after a strong herring fishery earlier this year contributed to higher export volumes", said Johan Kvalheim, responsible for pelagic species at the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Mackerel Records 69% Growth Led by South Korean Demand

Despite being historically a low season for catches, external sales of mackerel experienced a substantial surge. Norway exported 6,976 tonnes of mackerel valued at NOK 339 million (US$ 32.21 million) during July. This represented a year-on-year rise of 69 percent in value — a net increase of NOK 139 million (US$ 13.21 million) — and a 12 percent increase in exported volume.

The most relevant markets for Norwegian mackerel during the analyzed period were South Korea, Vietnam, and Egypt. In particular, South Korea led value growth in July, recording an increase in export value of NOK 116 million (US$ 11.02 million) for a total received volume of 2,312 tonnes.

"July is normally a quiet month for exports of Norwegian mackerel, and exports largely consist of the last volumes from the previous season. The strong export values primarily reflect record-high prices as a result of a tight raw material market after low catch volumes in both 2025 and 2026", stated Kvalheim.
