The Maldivian state-owned company processed 568 metric tonnes across 517 vessels, consolidating the minimum purchase price to protect the income of local fishermen.

The state-owned Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) presented its official weighing report for June 2026, detailing that a total of 517 fishing vessels landed 568 tonnes of tuna. The total value of these acquisitions amounted to 11.3 million MVR (approximately US$ 732,814.53), reflecting activity at the nation's key collection centers, such as the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex in Gaaf Alif Atoll and the Addu Fisheries Complex in Seenu Hulhumeedhoo.

The statistical breakdown of the tuna received by MIFCO during the month of June was distributed as follows:

• 9.3 million MVR (US$ 603,112.84) corresponded to 484.4 tonnes of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis).

• 331,440 MVR (US$ 21,494.16) corresponded to 16.6 tonnes of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares).

• 1.7 million MVR (US$ 110,246.43) corresponded to 67 tonnes of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) with an individual weight exceeding 15 kilograms.

With the objective of mitigating the impact of the seasonal low in catches and improving the profitability of the sector, MIFCO increased the minimum purchase price to 20 MVR (US$ 1.30) per kilogram during June. The President of the Republic, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, ratified that the government's policy is to maintain this price floor and avoid any reduction below said rate.

President Muizzu (pictured left) pointed out that the most relevant measure adopted by the administration to guarantee a fair price structure has been to float the base value in parallel with international market rates, a strategy that has yielded favorable results. He explained that, at the time the price flotation was implemented, a kilogram was trading at 16 MVR (US$ 1.04), managing to rise to the current 20 MVR, although he stressed that sustained effort will be required to consolidate this valuation in the continuous market.

These monthly figures show an adjustment compared to previous periods; for instance, in May, collection reached 1,791 tonnes across 693 vessels, a decrease compared to the 4,414 tonnes in April, due to the onset of the southwest monsoon and fewer fishing trips during the Eid festivities.

Despite fluctuations in global volumes, MIFCO maintains monthly disbursements exceeding US$ 2 million in direct payments to local fishing communities. Currently, the company's operations department is executing a modernization plan focused on reducing processing times to settle payments to fishermen within a maximum period of 48 hours after weighing, alongside advancing the construction of a new complex in Ihavandhoo and the relocation of its yellowfin tuna processing plant.
