Global Feed Leader Hits Sustainability Milestone, Replacing Fossil Fuels with Green Innovation

AMSTERDAM – Global aquaculture and animal nutrition giant Nutreco has officially unveiled its Impact Report 2025, marking a pivotal turning point in its journey toward a more resilient food system. The report, which consolidates data from its two flagship brands, Skretting and Trouw Nutrition, reveals that the company has achieved a massive 47% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to its 2018 baseline.

This significant drop is headlined by a total transition away from heavy fossil fuels; the company has successfully eliminated all use of coal and oil across its global operational footprint.

"This Impact Report 2025 marks a clear milestone. It shows where we've made progress and where focus and commitment are still needed as we continue to help build a more resilient and sustainable food system," said Bastiaan van Tilburg, CEO of Nutreco.

Operational Excellence and Circularity

The 2025 results highlight a shift toward circular economics and responsible procurement:

  • Waste Reduction: 90% of Nutreco's packaging is now classified as recyclable, reusable, or compostable.

  • Marine Sourcing: 88% of marine ingredients are now sourced via Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), a critical step for the future of Skretting’s aquaculture value chains.

  • Leadership Diversity: Women now represent 29% of senior management, following a concerted effort to diversify the executive ranks.

Empowering the Supply Chain

Through Trouw Nutrition and Skretting, the company is leveraging science-based nutrition and digital advisory tools to help farmers balance profitability with animal welfare. By focusing on feed efficiency and health-boosting additives, Nutreco is enabling its partners to meet increasingly strict environmental regulations without sacrificing productivity.

Facing the Gaps: The Path to 2030

Despite the successes, the report is notably candid about the "complex" areas where progress lagged behind the original 2025 roadmap. These hurdles have been used to refine the newly "sharpened" RoadMap 2030.

The next phase of the strategy will double down on three pillars: Climate and Environment, Good Citizenship and Livelihoods, and Animal Welfare. Nutreco aims to align more closely with global science-based targets while ensuring that sustainability solutions remain scalable and practical for farmers on the ground.

The Impact Report 2025 was prepared in reference to GRI standards, signaling the company's readiness for upcoming CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) requirements in the European Union.

Nutreco
