Síldarvinnslan Processing Plant Consolidates Role as Key Pelagic Hub Following Margrét EA 710 Landing Before Mackerel Season Closure

The Síldarvinnslan processing plant in Neskaupstaður reached approximately 5,600 tonnes of accumulated mackerel landings at the beginning of September. Operational activity at the facility has remained steady following the arrival of the pelagic vessel Beitir NK, which discharged 650 tonnes, and the subsequent landing of Margrét EA 710 with nearly 500 tonnes harvested in international waters known as Síldarsmugan.

Official landing records associated with Margrét EA 710 itemize a specific shipment of 501,812 kg. The primary portion of the mackerel volume is being processed as whole frozen product, although the factory has also produced smaller quantities of beheaded and filleted seafood products. Corporate representatives describe the raw material as high-grade quality and note that the mackerel campaign is entering its final stage, as processing operations begin transitioning toward the sea herring fishery scheduled for later in September.

Inter-Vessel Fleet Coordination Operations

Because mackerel harvesting takes place in distant offshore fishing grounds, rapid transport and strict temperature management are critical to maintaining seafood quality. To optimize logistics, Samherji and Síldarvinnslan execute a coordinated pumping framework between vessels. Under this system, one pelagic vessel consolidates the overall catch and returns to port while the remaining fleet continues fishing operations uninterrupted.

Executives at Samherji indicated that its two dedicated mackerel vessels held combined catch allocations exceeding 7,000 tonnes, a figure below the quotas authorized in previous years. Furthermore, crew members reported irregular fishing conditions, characterized by fast-moving pelagic shoals that appear and disperse rapidly.

Species Diversification in Processing Facilities

The recent processing of mackerel fits into a broader operational strategy across Síldarvinnslan production lines, which also logged the landing of 1,300 tonnes of blue whiting for freezing. The transformation of this secondary species is conducted during operational pauses in mackerel processing, demonstrating how Icelandic pelagic processing facilities balance raw material utilization across species to maintain active processing lines during shifts in fishery availability.
