Warehouse deliveries outpace new imports as consumer area inventories dip below previous year levels

A tightening supply chain has caused frozen salmon stock levels to shift to a year-on-year decrease, according to the latest inventory data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).

Overall frozen salmon stock levels for March fell to 95% of the previous year’s level, marking a distinct downward turn. In terms of actual figures, the stock stood at the 98% level. This pivot represents a slight contrast to the beginning of the year, where inventory levels sat comfortably at the 103% level in both January and February.

Consumption Area Inventories Take a Hit

The decline is acutely visible in major consumption areas. Following consecutive year-on-year increases of 50,204 tons in January and 53,859 tons in February, inventories in these critical hubs dropped to 52,875 tons in March—falling to the 97% level in actual figures.

This drawdown is the direct result of a double-whammy: a slowdown in new warehouse arrivals paired with an acceleration in market deliveries.

Import Arrivals Front-Loaded

Warehouse entries in consumption areas for March plummeted to 12,959 tons. This follows a massive influx of 18,881 tons in January, which subsequently tapered down to 15,835 tons in February.

When compared to March 2025, which saw entries of 15,191 tons, the current data indicates a continuing trend of front-loaded import arrivals earlier in the year.

Market Demand Accelerates

While entries slowed, demand moved in the opposite direction. Deliveries out of warehouses in consumption areas climbed to 13,943 tons in March. This represents a notable expansion from the 12,180 tons recorded in both January and February, and beats the 12,716 tons recorded in March of the previous year.

With deliveries now actively outpacing incoming supply, the drawdown on overall inventory figures has clearly begun to manifest across the market.
