Galician Company Forges Path for Sustainable Fisheries Improvement in Spain and Globally
CONGALSA, a seafood product company based in A Pobra do Caramiñal, Galicia, Spain, and a leading reference at the regional and national level for marine food products, is celebrating ten years of alliance with the international organization Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP). The partnership, which began in 2015, is described by the two entities as a “fruitful collaboration aimed at boosting fisheries sustainability, strengthening supply chain traceability, and promoting the responsible management of marine resources on a global scale.”

A Pioneering Partnership for Responsible Sourcing
The decision for CONGALSA to ally with SFP in 2015 was driven by SFP's international reputation for environmentally conscious sourcing and its ability to establish Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs). This move was significant, as CONGALSA was the first Spanish company in the frozen food sector to join the SFP initiative, demonstrating a leadership commitment to sustainability within the Spanish seafood industry.
David Comesaña, the company’s Purchasing Director, highlighted the benefits: “The adherence has allowed us to deepen our responsible purchasing strategy, advance in sustainability certifications, and collaborate more closely with suppliers and local communities for the protection of habitats and the viability of species.”
Key Achievements and Global Influence
Over the past decade, the alliance has solidified CONGALSA's leadership as a company committed to sustainability. The firm has actively participated in several world-renowned FIPs, focusing on commercially significant species such as the Jumbo Flying Squid (Dosidicus gigas) of Peru and the Blue Shark or tintorera (Prionace glauca).

Furthermore, CONGALSA is an active member of the Global Squid Roundtable (GS SR), a global forum that gathers cephalopod sector leaders to advocate for environmental and social sustainability actions in major squid fisheries. This roundtable, supported by SFP, recently adopted a new strategy in 2023 to address the risks of Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses in squid supply chains, underscoring the broader impact of such industry alliances.
The partnership with SFP also enabled CONGALSA to meet the rigorous challenge of managing a high volume of raw materials from diverse international fishing grounds, integrating scientific and sector information into its purchasing model, and subjecting its suppliers to strict environmental, social, and legal audits.

Future Vision and Alignment with Global Goals
CONGALSA views the ten years of collaboration as crucial in cementing its position as an organization centered on sustainability. The company notes that this alliance has propelled its progress toward the goals set by the Agenda 2030, particularly in eliminating unsustainable fishing practices, positioning them as a benchmark for compliance with global standards.
Comesaña concludes with a forward-looking perspective: “Going forward, we aspire to deepen and expand this alliance, exploring new joint initiatives oriented toward the global sustainability of fisheries and reinforcing our commitment to responsible sourcing and the protection of marine ecosystems.”
