Argentine Illex Squid 2026 Season: Staggered Opening Confirmed

The Federal Fisheries Council sets the anticipated start for January 2, maintaining the same scheme as the previous year despite requests from the vessel owner chambers.
The Federal Fisheries Council (CFP) has confirmed the staggered and anticipated opening of the fishing season for the Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) for 2026. The decision establishes that operations will begin starting January 2, as reported by Revista Puerto.

The defined scheme aims to encourage the early capture of the South Patagonian stock:

First Phase (Incentive): The fleet operating for three days between the parallels 49ºS and 52ºS (targeting the South Patagonian stock) will gain early access to the Southern Management Unit.

Second Phase (Main Access): The incentive is that these vessels will be allowed to start fishing south of the 44ºS parallel starting January 7.
Third Phase (General): The rest of the fleet, which chooses not to participate in the early South Patagonian fishing, can begin fishing the summer spawning stock starting January 12.
Darío Sócrate, president of CAPA, regretted the decision: "We would have preferred to start earlier," although he acknowledged that "one week doesn't change the equation" for the season.
The decision was maintained even after INIDEP reported that the summer spawning stock is already "nearing the end of its life cycle" in its usual fishing area (44ºS and 48ºS, west of the 62ºW meridian), suggesting that the fleet should start even before the end of the year to maximize the capture of this resource.
“We understand that it is complex, and that is why we are asking that it be fully opened from January 6th so that we can take advantage of a resource that has already spawned and is at the end of its biological cycle,” Socrate emphasized.
