Fisheries production rises 2%, signaling positive trends for national food security and economic contribution.
JAKARTA – Indonesia's fisheries sector demonstrated robust growth in the first quarter of 2025, with overall production increasing by 2 percent compared to the same period last year. This positive development was announced by Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono during a working meeting with Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR) at the Senayan Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Minister Trenggono reported that provisional figures for fisheries production reached 5.58 million tons by March 30, 2025. Delving deeper, he highlighted that this growth was supported by a 3 percent rise in cultivated fish production, a 2.2 percent increase in seaweed production, and a 0.7 percent growth in capture fisheries.
Beyond production volumes, the Minister also noted a favorable trend in the welfare of those working in the sector. The average fishermen's exchange rate (NTN) in May 2025 showed 1.8 percent growth compared to May 2024, while the average fish farmer’s exchange rate (NTPi) in May 2025 recorded an increase of 1.4 percent over the corresponding period. "Both showed growth compared to May the previous year," Trenggono affirmed.

The positive momentum extended to international trade, with the export value of marine and fishery products swelling by 6.5 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to Q1 2024. Export volumes also saw a 2.3 percent growth over the same period.
Furthermore, the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry's non-tax state revenue (PNBP) demonstrated significant improvement. As of June 2025, the PNBP realization was 13 percent higher than the previous year, reaching Rp975.74 billion (US$60 million), up from Rp861.76 billion (US$53 million) in June 2024.
