Export momentum through September highlights market divergence, with strong gains in China and ASEAN offsetting declines in the US, EU, and Japan

Vietnam's seafood exports reached an estimated US$1.135 billion in September 2026, representing an 11.9% increase compared to the same period last year. This result brought the cumulative total for the first nine months of the year to US$9.103 billion, up 11.4% year-on-year.

Despite double-digit overall growth, market performance diverged significantly across major destinations. China-Hong Kong and ASEAN countries recorded strong expansion, while the United States, the European Union (EU), and Japan all experienced declines in September, according to Ms. Le Hang, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Although September maintained export turnover above US$1.1 billion with a higher growth rate than August, the total monthly export value was slightly lower than the previous month. This performance indicates that while transaction volumes remain high toward the end of the year, growth momentum is uneven across product categories and regions.

Performance by Key Marine Product Categories

Export results across major product groups varied in growth rates and overall impact on trade balances:

  • Shrimp (Penaeus vannamei / Penaeus monodon): Exports of shrimp—which accounts for approximately 41% of Vietnam's total seafood exports—reached US$467 million in September. Cumulative exports for the first nine months totaled US$3.75 billion, an 11% increase. However, the slower growth rate in September (3.9%) reflects pressure on order expansion due to supply competition and market absorption constraints. In the US, frozen shrimp sales revenue increased due to higher prices, even as sales volumes declined in August. Meanwhile, the EU reduced its imports of raw shrimp.

  • Pangasius (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus): Freshwater catfish performed strongly in September, reaching approximately US$214 million (+18,6%). Cumulative sales reached US$1.74 billion, up 10.7%. Tighter supply of certain wild-caught whitefish created additional market opportunities for pangasius. In Japan, importer Kyokuyo continued introducing pangasius through professional distribution channels.

  • Tuna (Thunnus spp.): Export turnover reached US$82 million in September (+13.1%), bringing the nine-month total to US$716 million (+3.5%). Although demand for canned tuna improved in the US, the market outlook remains dependent on US import conditions and fishing documentation requirements in the EU.

  • Other Marine Species: Exports of various marine fish reached US$1.741 billion in the first nine months (+12.2%). Cephalopod exports (squid and octopus) reached US$606 million (+15.4%), while crabs, lobsters, and other crustaceans reached US$354 million (+31.6%). Bivalve mollusks reached US$231 million (+25.2%), despite a 3.5% contraction in September.

The China-Hong Kong market emerged as the primary growth driver, accounting for roughly a quarter of Vietnam's total seafood exports. Additional demand from this market contributed approximately 62% of the overall absolute increase in export value. However, the reopening of fishing grounds in the Yellow Sea-Bohai region in early September and the restoration of export permits for Ecuadorian shrimp facilities could exert downward pressure on prices.

In contrast, exports to the United States fell 3.4% in September, hindered by additional tax costs and MMPA/COA compliance requirements. In the EU, shipments declined 12.8% for the month, taking cumulative results down 3%. Japan also recorded a monthly decline of 13.7%, lowering its nine-month cumulative growth to a marginal 0.8%.

Full-Year Outlook

Following rapid expansion in the third quarter, seafood exports are expected to slow during the fourth quarter. A significant portion of orders for year-end consumption was delivered ahead of schedule, limiting the potential for additional purchasing.

Despite these headwinds, total full-year seafood exports for 2026 are projected to reach approximately US$12.000 billion.

The sector faces challenges across both supply and demand: farmed shrimp, pangasius, and tilapia face raw material supply constraints, while wild-capture fisheries face strict origin and traceability requirements. Fourth-quarter export volumes are expected to be lower than third-quarter levels, narrowing overall annual growth compared to the double-digit pace set through September.
