The measure benefits vessels with a hold capacity under 10 cubic meters, allocating a quota of 9,879 metric tons for the final stretch of the year, while awaiting scientific findings from IMARPE.

LIMA - The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) formally initiated a new catch allocation period for the Jumbo Flying Squid or giant squid (Dosidicus gigas) fishery in Peruvian waters. The decision authorizes harvesting operations for artisanal fishing vessels with a hold capacity of less than 10 cubic meters, which are permitted to operate through the period spanning from October 1 to December 31. Conversely, the intermediate-scale fleet, comprising vessels between 10 and 32.6 cubic meters, remains suspended from operations.

The regulatory framework for the small-scale artisanal sector was established through Ministerial Resolution No. 00339-2026-PRODUCE, published on September 23, which enabled the resumption of fishing activities starting at 00:00 hours on the day following its publication. This regulation directly links harvesting activities to the overall catch limit established for the final quarter of the year.

Under the provisions of Ministerial Resolution No. 00304-2026-PRODUCE, the under-10-cubic-meter segment has been allocated a quota of 9,879 metric tons for the October–December period, in addition to any unharvested balance remaining from the previous cycle between August 30 and September 30. Regarding the 10 to 32.6 cubic meter fleet segment, the resolution designates a catch quota of 31,282 metric tons for the same quarter; however, vessel operations remain on hold pending a potential lifting of the suspension by PRODUCE, which will depend on scientific evaluation by the Marine Institute of Peru (IMARPE).

The government ruling adheres to precautionary advice issued by IMARPE. The scientific authority cautioned that the uptick in catch per unit effort recorded in September should not be interpreted as conclusive evidence of greater resource abundance. Consequently, the institute recommended deferring any major adjustments to the fishery management regime until the findings of the hydroacoustic assessment survey CR2609-10 are made available.

For the full 2026 fishing year, the total allowable catch limit for giant squid was fixed at 709,659 metric tons. Of this total allocation, 82,321 metric tons were assigned specifically to the timeframe from August 30 to December 31, divided according to hold capacity and operational windows. Furthermore, authorities emphasized that vessel operators must strictly comply with existing provisions regarding fishing permits, vessel monitoring systems, and official landing record registrations at designated ports.
