Cumulative landings of Hokkaido fall salmon reached 476 tonnes through September 8, up 16% from a year earlier. However, prices for both males and females started the campaign 20% to 30% higher, while official forecasts anticipate another season of exceptionally low availability.

HOKKAIDO — The 2026 Japanese fall salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) season has opened with an apparent contradiction: initial catches exceed those from the same period last year, yet prices continue to reflect strong concerns over raw material scarcity.

Through September 8, cumulative landings in Hokkaido reached approximately 476 tonnes, a 16% year-on-year increase, according to data published by Minato Shimbun. This figure still corresponds to a very early phase of the campaign, as only part of the fishing grounds were operational, with the opening expanding progressively across all of Hokkaido during the second week of the month.

Despite the initial volume increase, the market started with firm quotations. References for fresh fish, both males and females, stood 20% to 30% above the start of the previous campaign, according to Sapporo market operators consulted by the Japanese outlet.

A 16% Increase Does Not Yet Mean Recovery

The initial increase must be interpreted with caution. The scientific forecast for 2026 is considerably more negative than last year's.

The Hokkaido Research Organization (HRO) estimates that approximately 3.645 million salmon will return to the island this fall, compared to 6.859 million recorded in 2025. If the forecast holds, returns would decline 46.9% year-on-year and equal just 53.1% of last season's already reduced level.

The starting point is particularly delicate because 2025 had already marked the lowest level recorded since the beginning of the Heisei era in 1989. That year's return fell to 6.86 million fish, 39% of the previous year's total, falling far short of scientific model predictions.

The 2026 outlook is particularly weak in key producing regions. HRO expects around 2.108 million fish in Okhotsk, just 49.9% of last year's level, and 331,000 in Nemuro, or 51.9%. In Western Erimo, the projection drops to 41.9% of the 2025 outcome.

Pressure on Fresh Fish and Ikura

The forecasted scarcity has implications reaching far beyond the whole fish market. Hokkaido fall salmon simultaneously supplies fresh consumption, fillet production, salted and frozen items, and a major ikura and sujiko processing industry made from female roe.

Consequently, elevated fish prices at the start of the season can quickly translate into higher costs across several product chains.

The market also enters the new season with a complex roe inventory situation. Prior to the start of fishing, Minato Shimbun estimated around 800 tonnes of carryover ikura stocks from the previous season. Production in 2025 was exceptionally low, but high prices weakened sales, leaving significant inventory ahead of the new harvest.

This creates an unusual market dynamic: a risk of new raw material shortages exists while processed inventory from the previous year still needs to find commercial outlets.

Market Awaits Full Hokkaido

Opening Developments during the second half of September will be decisive in determining whether the strong start in landings reflects a genuine departure from forecasts or merely an early-season anomaly.

Industry participants will closely monitor entry rates in Okhotsk and Nemuro—two critical areas for total volume—alongside male-to-female ratios, average weight, and the supply of fish suitable for roe processing.

The scientific forecast itself carries an element of uncertainty. HRO notes that recent shifts in salmon maturation age have reduced the accuracy of traditional predictive models, prompting adjustments to the data used in their projections.

For processors, wholesalers, and retailers, the 476 tonnes and initial 16% growth offer a positive signal, but one that remains insufficient to declare a recovery.

The dominant figure governing the market remains unchanged: Japan faces a season in which scientific projections expect barely more than half the salmon returns seen in 2025.

Until that uncertainty is resolved through several weeks of landings, prices 20% to 30% higher demonstrate that buyers and sellers continue to value Hokkaido fall salmon as a scarce commodity.
