Dutch Pioneer Targets Growing Demand for Sustainable Seafood Alternatives, Showcasing Innovations at Anuga 2025

Schouten Europe, the pioneering Dutch plant-based food manufacturer, has unveiled its significantly improved plant-based tuna product this month. Marketed as Vegan Green Tuna, the new product is designed to meet rising consumer demand for a sustainable alternative to conventional fish, without compromising on taste or experience.

Product Manager Annemiek Vervoort

Product Manager Annemiek Vervoot described the launch as a "significant step forward" in both texture and taste compared to the company's previous tuna analogue, a product they had first introduced as TuNo in 2021.

"We are confident this new product will meet consumer expectations even more effectively," commented Vervoot. "Many tuna species are heavily overfished and some, such as bluefin tuna, are even threatened with extinction. Our new plant-based tuna has the same structure and taste as real tuna, allowing everyone to continue enjoying the flavor of tuna responsibly."

Key Ingredients and Product Details

The Vegan Green Tuna is made using a blend of plant-based proteins—specifically wheat, soy, and pea—to achieve a firm texture and a juicy bite, earning it a Nutri-Score A rating. It is designed to be ready-to-eat cold, offering high versatility and convenience for use in spreads, wraps, salads, sushi, and prepared meals.

The product is available chilled in 3.5kg or 1kg bags, primarily targeting the foodservice and ready-meal industries, with a minimum shelf life of three months.

Continuous Innovation in the 'Classics' Range

The new tuna analogue is part of Schouten's ongoing effort to refine and expand its Classics range, which replicates popular meat and fish favorites. Schouten, which has been developing plant-based proteins since 1990, is focused on closing the sensory gap between alternative and conventional products.

This commitment to innovation was also evident in the recent launch of a new plant-based sausage. This sausage features an innovative alt-fat ingredient designed to deliver "unique juiciness" and a plant-based casing to ensure an authentic eating experience, narrowing the gap with traditional sausages. Ruben Molenaar, R&D Manager at Schouten, noted that the continuous improvement of these products is key to driving greater consumer acceptance.

Both the Vegan Green Tuna and the new sausage were showcased at the world's leading food and beverage trade fair, Anuga 2025, which took place in Cologne, Germany, from October 4 to 8.
