Norway Pelagic Fishing Update Week 23: North Sea Herring Fishery Flourishes Amidst Active Norwegian Season

The North Sea herring fishery reports strong activity with over 10,000 tonnes landed last week, while mackerel fishing continues steadily and significant catches of blue whiting and sandeel are also noted across various areas.
BERGEN – The Norwegian fishing season is in full swing, with particularly robust activity in the North Sea herring fishery. Despite rough weather conditions preceding the weekend, over 10,000 tonnes of North Sea herring were reported landed last week, with Sunday being the strongest day, accounting for over 3,000 tonnes.

The herring fishery primarily took place between 59.30 and 61 degrees latitude. Reports indicate the herring is of fine quality, averaging between 160 and 180 grams per fish. A significant portion, 8,767 tonnes, was designated for human consumption.
Steady Mackerel Catches

The smaller fleet landed over 120 tonnes of mackerel last week. Fishing operations stretched from Ryfylke in the south to the southern parts of Vestland county, with a few catches also reported from the Møre coast. The mackerel continues to show good quality, averaging around 400 grams per fish. 52 tonnes of the mackerel catch were utilized for fresh consumption.
Blue Whiting and Sandeel Contributions

In other fisheries, five vessels collectively landed 4,478 tonnes of blue whiting. One of these vessels operated in the Norwegian Sea, while four reported catches from "Kanten" (likely referring to the Norwegian Trench or Shelf Edge). These vessels from Kanten also brought in 310 tonnes of herring and 43 tonnes of silvery pout as bycatch.
Furthermore, 2,875 tonnes of sandeel were reported by two Swedish and one Danish vessel, with all catches originating from the Danish sector.
