Australian seafood exporters are set to benefit from faster and more streamlined processes for sending consignments offshore, thanks to continued support from the Albanese Labor Government.
The newly implemented Next Export Documentation (NEXDOC) system, an online document management platform, simplifies the export documentation process, making the $1.8 billion seafood trade more efficient. By digitizing the application process for permits and certificates, the system saves exporters valuable time and resources. Export certificates are now digitally generated and easily printable, offering a seamless approach to managing export logistics.
Covering a broad range of seafood—from wild-caught fish to aquaculture products—NEXDOC is designed with enhanced data collection, analysis, and reporting capabilities. This upgrade facilitates secure and efficient delivery of Australian fish to international markets, providing better tracking mechanisms and reducing the risk of fraudulent certifications.
Major markets for Australian seafood include China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, all of which have a high demand for premium Australian products
Other sectors, such as dairy, eggs, and honey, have already benefitted from the NEXDOC system's self-service features, certificate security via QR codes, and a user-friendly web-based portal. This portal empowers exporters to manage their documents independently, reducing reliance on courier services and associated costs.
The expansion of NEXDOC across agricultural exports is part of the government’s $322.9 million Digital Services to Take Farmers to Markets package, a five-year initiative aimed at implementing digital solutions to streamline trade, cut costs, and improve efficiencies across industries.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Julie Collins MP, said:
“NEXDOC will enhance the competitiveness of Australia’s seafood industry on the global stage by reducing costs and automating labor-intensive processes. While existing certification requirements remain unchanged, this digital platform simplifies the administrative side of exporting, ultimately saving time and making it easier for businesses to thrive.
“This initiative is part of our broader commitment to strengthening Australia's reputation as a leading exporter of high-quality agricultural commodities, supported by cutting-edge digital services.”
