TEHRAN – Iran exported over 118,000 tons of fishery products, valued at $187 million, in the first five months of the current Iranian calendar year, which began on March 21, 2024, according to Seyyed Hossein Hosseini, the head of the Iran Fisheries Organization (IFO).
The data, sourced from Iran’s customs office, shows a 33% increase in export value and a 43% rise in volume compared to the same period last year (April–August 2023).
Marine fish made up approximately 40.7% of Iran's fishery exports during this period, followed by commercial fish feed (21.4%) and shrimp (17.1%), Hosseini reported. He also noted an increase in caviar exports, which reached 2.328 kilograms. Exports of cyprinid and trout also grew, reaching 9,651 metric tons and 5,711 metric tons, respectively.
Hosseini added that Iran imported around $61 million worth of products and materials essential for its fisheries sector in the same five-month span.

This surge in fishery exports aligns with Iran’s broader strategy to diversify its economy away from oil dependence. Over recent years, Iran has significantly increased its non-oil exports, including agricultural products, contributing billions to the country’s revenue.
The expansion of fisheries and aquaculture activities has also boosted domestic seafood consumption, reducing the country’s reliance on imports of staples like red meat.
