Lisbon (EFE) - The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) began negotiations on Monday in Vale do Lobo (southern Portugal) on the fishing of species such as bluefin tuna or tropical tunas in its first assembly after the coronavirus pandemic.
The 52 ICCAT partners -among them the European Union (EU), the United States, Brazil and Japan- held the inaugural session last Monday, which served as a first contact.
During the week they will hold various technical panels behind closed doors and on November 21 they will disclose the conclusions.
In these days, the fishing of important species for Spain will be negotiated, such as bluefin tuna, tropical tuna and sharks, among others.
The European Commission (EC) will negotiate on behalf of the 27 community countries.
Some of the issues to be negotiated are the increase in the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) of bluefin tuna and a higher quota of tropical tuna, used in canning, such as yellowfin (light tuna), bigeye and skipjack.
The vice president of the Spanish employers' association Cepesca and managing director of the Organization of Associated Producers of Large Freezer Tuna Vessels (Opagac), Julio Morón, explained to EFE that the return to the face-to-face format will make negotiations "much more fluid."
He also recalled that, although the "powerful" negotiators are the EU, the United States, Brazil and Japan, among others, the groups of coastal countries are gaining relevance.
