Strengthening Krone and Middle East Tensions Drive 5% Export Dip in April

A sharp appreciation of the Norwegian krone has emerged as the primary headwind for Norway’s seafood industry, stalling a period of record-breaking growth. Norway exported seafood worth NOK 13.4 billion (US$ 1.45 billion) in April, marking a decline of NOK 742 million (US$ 80.1 million) — a 5 per cent drop compared to the same month last year.

While geopolitical friction and trade disputes played a role, the currency market proved to be the most significant factor. Compared to April of last year, the krone has strengthened by 7 per cent against the euro and a staggering 12 per cent against the US dollar.

“There are several factors affecting the decline in exports in April, such as the tariff dispute with the US and the war in the Middle East. The main explanation for the fall, however, is a sharp strengthening of the Norwegian krone against both the euro and the dollar”, says Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Geopolitical Ripples and Logistical Hurdles

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has disrupted traditional trade routes, hitting high-value species like salmon and trout particularly hard. Increased transport costs and reduced shipping capacity have been compounded by a decline in regional tourism.

“The war in the Middle East is having a particular impact on the flow of salmon and trout, with higher transport costs, reduced shipping capacity and reduced tourism. Exports fell to all markets in the Middle East in April, as well as to a number of Asian markets”, says Chramer.

Export volumes for salmon and trout plummeted by over 20 per cent in several key markets:

  • The Philippines: -66%
  • United Arab Emirates: -44%
  • Israel: -36%
  • Japan: -33%
  • Saudi Arabia: -27%
  • Vietnam: -24%

Supply Constraints in Wild Fisheries

Beyond currency and conflict, the industry faced internal supply pressures. Lower quotas and reduced landings impacted the availability of wild-caught species.

“Lower quotas and landings have characterised exports of several species in April, including cod, saithe, mackerel and prawns. Higher prices helped to cushion the fall in value, but the export value is falling significantly for all wild-caught species", says Chramer.

Mixed Results: US Decline vs. China’s Surge

The United States market remains a point of concern for Norwegian exporters. Uncertainty regarding future tariffs, combined with the weaker dollar, saw exports to the US fall by 30 per cent to NOK 973 million (US$ 105.1 million) in April. Year-to-date, the US market value has contracted by 32 per cent, a loss of NOK 2 billion (US$ 216 million).

“Uncertainty over future tariff conditions and a weaker dollar contributed to the decline in exports to the US continuing in April as well”, says Chramer.

Conversely, China provided a significant bright spot. It recorded the highest growth in value for the month, jumping by NOK 324 million (US$ 35 million), or 36 per cent. China imported 16,217 tonnes of seafood, a 24 per cent increase in volume compared to April last year.

The Year So Far

Despite the difficult month, Poland, China, and the US remain the top three destinations for Norwegian seafood. For the first four months of the year, Norway has exported seafood totaling NOK 57 billion (US$ 6.16 billion), a slight overall decline of NOK 1.4 billion (US$ 151.2 million) compared to the same period in the previous year.
