Record Funding to Fuel International Demand and Support Coastal Communities

JUNEAU, Alaska — The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) has successfully secured a massive financial injection for the state’s fishing industry, capturing over $4.7 million in federal Market Access Program (MAP) funding and an additional $6 million via the America First Trade Promotion Program (AFTPP).

The combined $10.7 million in federal grants is earmarked specifically to sharpen Alaska’s competitive edge in the global marketplace. While MAP funds are a staple of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designed to share costs for overseas promotional activities, the AFTPP represents a fresh USDA initiative aimed at aggressively expanding the footprint of U.S. agricultural commodities abroad.

Strategic Investment and Matching Funds

These federal awards operate on a competitive basis, requiring ASMI to provide matching funds to unlock the full capital. The breakdown of the matching requirements is as follows:

  • MAP Funds: Required match of 33%.

  • AFTPP Funds: Required match of 10%.

To meet these requirements, ASMI leverages State of Alaska general funds alongside the industry’s own marketing assessment—currently set at 0.5% of the ex-vessel value (the price paid to fishers upon landing their catch).

“These international grant awards, in combination with ASMI’s strong efforts in the U.S. domestic market, help to increase demand for Alaska seafood, which in turn increases the value throughout the Alaska seafood supply chain. This benefits Alaska processors, businesses and fishermen, as well as Alaska communities.”Jeremy Woodrow, ASMI Executive Director.

A Critical Lifeline for Exports

With 70% of Alaska seafood by value being exported annually, international marketing is not just a luxury—it is a necessity for the state's economic resilience.

“I am immensely proud of the ASMI International team, whose efforts and achievements have resulted in sustained and expanding support from USDA. With 70 percent of Alaska seafood by value exported annually, these awards come at a critical time for our industry. They provide market diversification, competitiveness, increase resiliency, and continue to allow Alaska to feed the world with healthy, nutritious and sustainable protein.”Nicole Alba, ASMI International Program Director.

Proven Track Record

This latest windfall follows a period of significant growth for the institute. A 2025 analysis highlighted that ASMI captured more than $40 million in competitive federal grants between 2020 and 2024. This nearly equaled the $44 million generated by the industry assessment and State of Alaska funding during that same four-year window, effectively doubling the industry's marketing power.
