Weaker US demand, reduced quotas for wild fish, and currency shifts reshaped Norway’s export map, pushing Europe and China into more prominent roles.

Norway exported seafood worth NOK 14.8 billion (approximately USD 1.4 billion) in January, marking a decline of NOK 416 million (around USD 40 million), or 3%, compared with the same month last year. The downturn was driven by a combination of lower salmon prices, a stronger Norwegian krone, reduced fishing quotas, and a sharp fall in export value to the United States.

“Lower salmon prices, a weaker US dollar, reduced quotas for several wild fish species and tougher competition in important markets meant that Norwegian seafood exports fell in January,” said Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council.

United States Loses Ground as a Key Market

In January last year, the United States was Norway’s largest single seafood market. One year later, export value to the US has dropped by 37%, pushing the country down to fourth place, overtaken by Poland, China, and the Netherlands.

Chramer pointed to a difficult trade environment:
“High and unpredictable tariffs and a weaker dollar have created great uncertainty and challenges in the USA, which remains our largest fillet market for both salmon and trout. The demanding trade situation is something we are seeing the consequences of now.”

The impact is already visible in Norway’s processing sector. After 8% growth in export volumes of salmon and trout fillets in 2025, volumes fell by 9% in January compared with the same month last year.

“This has consequences for large parts of the seafood industry. Uncertainty is widespread, and the global seafood trade is closely intertwined, so this will affect several species and markets,” Chramer added.

Norway’s 10 Largest Seafood Markets in January

By export value (changes compared with January last year):

  • Poland: NOK 1.9 billion (≈ USD 180 million, +55%)

  • China: NOK 1.2 billion (≈ USD 114 million, +8%)

  • Netherlands: NOK 943 million (≈ USD 90 million, +8%)

  • United States: NOK 937 million (≈ USD 89 million, –37%)

  • France: NOK 913 million (≈ USD 87 million, +1%)

  • United Kingdom: NOK 849 million (≈ USD 81 million, +2%)

  • Spain: NOK 820 million (≈ USD 78 million, –4%)

  • Denmark: NOK 733 million (≈ USD 70 million, –11%)

  • Italy: NOK 635 million (≈ USD 60 million, –19%)

  • South Korea: NOK 432 million (≈ USD 41 million, –21%)

“For the first time ever, the export value of salmon to China exceeded NOK 1 billion (about USD 95 million) in a single month. Strong Chinese demand is cushioning some of the impact of the US downturn,” said Chramer.

Europe Strengthens Its Position

Europe continued to consolidate its role as Norway’s main seafood destination. In January, the European market accounted for 66% of total seafood exports, up from 62% a year earlier.

“Growth to Poland stood out. This is traditionally a processing market, but now consumers there are also eating more salmon themselves,” Chramer explained.

Currency movements also played a key role. The Norwegian krone strengthened significantly against the US dollar and several major Asian currencies compared with January last year.

“This dampened the export value measured in kroner. A stronger krone makes Norwegian seafood more expensive in markets like the USA and Japan,” Chramer noted.

Quota Cuts Drive High Prices and Lower Volumes

Further quota reductions for several wild-caught species shaped exports at the start of the year. Mackerel, saithe, and prawns all saw high prices but declining volumes.

“For mackerel, we have to go back to 1990 to find a lower export volume. This is now being felt throughout the value chain,” said Chramer. “The battle for raw materials has never been tougher, which is particularly demanding for the onshore processing industry.”

Despite the January decline, analysts note that Norway remains the world’s largest seafood exporter, supplying more than 150 countries, and that shifting demand toward Europe and Asia could help stabilize exports if currency and trade conditions remain volatile.
