The import volume of frozen skate into South Korea in June 2024 has decreased by 24% compared to the same period last year. 462 tons of frozen skate were imported in June 2024, down significantly from 608 tons in June 2023.

The cumulative import volume until June 2024 was 1,733 tons, a 5% decrease from 1,822 tons in the same period last year.

This volume accounts for 0.4% of the total fishery import volume of 445,418 tons.

Argentina was the largest exporter of frozen skate, accounting for 43% (739 tons) of the total imports, followed by Japan with 19% (327 tons), the United States with 16% (284 tons), and Chile with 178 tons.

The import prices by country were highest from Chile at USD 7.50/kg, followed by Argentina at USD 5.37/kg, the United States at USD 5.31/kg, and the lowest from Norway at USD 3.04/kg.

The import value of frozen skate in June was USD 4.24 million, a 20% decrease from USD 3.01 million in June 2023.

However, the cumulative import value until June 2024 was USD 8.91 million, a 10% increase from USD 8.13 million in the same period last year. This increase is attributed to the average import price rising by 15%, from USD 4.46/kg last year to USD 5.14/kg this year.

As a reference, the domestic wholesale distribution price of frozen skate from Iceland is currently set at KRW 1,600 per kilogram for 24kg units.
