IN BRIEF - Embrapa Showcases Aquaculture Innovations at International Fish Congress in the Amazon

BRAZIL
Monday, April 21, 2025

Focusing on genetics, management, and sustainability, Embrapa will launch a digital platform to empower family fish farming at IFC Amazônia.

Embrapa will actively participate in the International Fish Congress & Fish Expo Brazil (IFC Amazônia), held from April 23 to 25 in Belém, Pará. Researchers from four of Embrapa's specialized units will present their latest findings and innovations across various aquaculture domains. A key highlight will be the launch of a new digital platform specifically designed for rural extension agents, with the aim of strengthening family-based fish farming practices.

Researchers Fernanda O'Sullivan and Flávia Tavares, from Embrapa Fisheries and Aquaculture (Palmas-TO), will lead discussions on the production of native fish species in net cages, emphasizing the benefits of utilizing monosex female populations. Dr. O'Sullivan, who specializes in genome editing, explains that “monosex populations offer significant economic advantages in aquaculture due to the common occurrence of sexual dimorphism, where distinct technical differences exist between males and females. Cultivating the superior gender leads to accelerated yields. One effective method for obtaining monosex populations in fish is through the sexual reversal of the fry.”

Their presentation will highlight the case of tambaqui, a native fish extensively studied at Embrapa, where females exhibit significantly greater weight and, consequently, higher productivity compared to males.

The conference "Financing Opportunities for the Blue Economy," organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA), has successfully highlighted the support instruments—European and national—that promote the sustainable development of the blue economy.

As stated during the conference, "small and medium-sized businesses have support instruments, once we provide advice and create synergies. We not only finance fishing and the maritime industry but also clean energy. There is no double financing; there is a great deal of interaction between projects. The first barrier is a significant documentation barrier, but the programs are based on subsidies and the contracting of services

IN BRIEF - Russian Fishing Fleet Welcomes Two New Vessels for Bottom Fish in the Okhotsk Sea

RUSSIAN FEDERATION
Monday, April 21, 2025

The "Avacha" and "Oktyabrsky," built under the investment quota program, expand the V.I. Lenin Fishing Collective Farm's capacity.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky witnessed the launch of two new small fishing vessels, the "Avacha" and the "Oktyabrsky," further bolstering Russia's fishing fleet.

These vessels were commissioned by the V.I. Lenin Fishing Collective Farm as part of the investment quota program, an initiative designed to modernize and expand the fishing industry.

The "Avacha" and "Oktyabrsky" are the latest additions to the Project 04130 series, which comprises a total of six vessels. Notably, four other vessels from this series have already been delivered to the V.I. Lenin Fishing Collective Farm and are currently engaged in fishing operations.

An interesting detail is that these vessels are named after fishing villages located in the Kamchatka Krai region, highlighting their connection to the local fishing heritage. The newly launched vessels are specifically designed for catching bottom-dwelling commercial fish species, including cod, flounder, greenling, squid, and grenadier, within the productive waters of the Sea of Okhotsk. The harvested raw fish will then be transferred either to a dedicated processing vessel or to a coastal processing factory for further handling.

Key Technical Specifications:

  • Length: 28.3 meters
  • Hold Volume: 78.5 cubic meters
  • Maximum Fish Load: 75 tons
  • Maximum Speed: 12 knots

CHINA
Thursday, April 17, 2025

The People's Republic of China has become the 108th member state of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (PSMA).

The PSMA seeks to ensure that only legal, regulated, and declared fish catches are landed in ports and ultimately marketed. "This is achieved by allowing parties to deny entry or use of the port to foreign vessels suspected of engaging in IUU fishing, thereby preventing catches resulting from these illicit practices from reaching markets and consumers," explains FAO.

EGYPT
Thursday, April 17, 2025

The chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, Osama Rabie, declared this Wednesday that the Red Sea "is now safe" and called on shipping companies to return to transiting through the Egyptian canal, after many opted to take other routes when Yemen's Houthi rebels began their attacks on shipping in November 2023. "I call on all ambassadors to convey to their shipping companies that the Red Sea is now safe. The last Houthi attack was last year. I think there should be no concern," Rabie said at a press conference from the Authority's headquarters in the northeastern Egyptian town of Ismailia.
