Salmon farmer Mowi ASA recorded best-ever fourth-quarter revenues of €1.36 billion for the closing three months of 2022. The Bergen, Norway-headquartered company’s operational Q4 profit was €239 million, compared with €146 million in the corresponding quarter of 2021
The fourth-quarter cemented a record financial year, Mowi said. For the first time in its near 60-year history, the company crossed the €1 billion earnings mark with its operational profit for the full year reaching €1.005 billion. Its revenue in excess of €4.9 billion euros was also a new record for the company.
The vessel sank off Bleik on Andøya on 9 January. All six on board were rescued.
In the report, the course of events is described and it is also pointed out that "Good control of rescue equipment contributed to an increased chance of survival" for the six on board.
The National Accident Investigation Board gives a detailed account of the sequence of events:
"The fishing vessel Klævtind 1 was set on autopilot and maintained a speed of 1-2 knots. The course was set to bring the vessel under the shelter of the rock formation on Andøya in Nordland.
After approx. one and a half hour ground support Klævtind 1 on a reef. An attempt was made to tow the vessel, but the tow had to be interrupted and Klævtind 1 sank. All six on board were rescued.

Combined farm projects looks at nutritional benefits for fish and seaweed
Salmon farmer Cermaq and kelp grower Folla Alger have teamed up with scientists to examine the practicalities and benefits of growing fish and seaweed on a combined sea site in Norway.
The Nordfoldleira site in Steigen in Nordland has salmon pens on the edges of the layout and space for kelp in the middle.

Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries has pointed the finger at Norcod over a cod escape incident in the Norland region.
The Directorate said it had received the results of DNA tracing of escaped cod in Meløy, and had found there was a very large degree of genetic similarity between the escaped cod caught by fishermen and fish from cages at the Norcod facility.

Norwegian longliner company Leinebris AS has chosen Carsoe as the factory supplier for its fleet’s newest addition – a vessel bearing the company’s name that will be outfitted to combine seine netting, longlining and gillnetting.
Leinebris is being built at Tersan Shipyard in Turkey and is scheduled for delivery in 2025.

Norwegian salmon prices decreased 0.55 percent over the sixth week of 2023.
Prices are down NOK 0.50 (USD 0.049, EUR 0.46) week-over-week, according to the Nasdaq Salmon Index.
The weighted average index of weekly sales prices and volumes of fresh Atlantic superior salmon, head-on gutted – reported by a panel of Norwegian salmon exporters and salmon producers – found the average per-kilogram price of Norwegian salmon to be NOK 91.04 (USD 8.90, EUR 8.33).

Farmed salmon start their lives in freshwater tanks on land. The farmers leave the lights on all day long, which means that it is permanently “day” for the young salmon. This results in them eating more and growing faster.
But in order for the salmon to become ready for salt water (undergo smoltification), the farmers must first go down to 12-hour “winter days”, before returning to 24-hour days.
Operating profit hits 30-year high despite troubles in last quarter of 2022
Norway and Canada salmon farmer Grieg Seafood made a record operating profit of NOK 1.739 billion (£142 million) last year and produced the highest ever harvest from its current farming regions.
The results, in a year defined by high salmon prices, were achieved despite a weaker fourth quarter than the same period in 2021.
