The hidden properties of many species of New Zealand seafood, including greenshell mussels, will be explored and unlocked at a new marine extracts plant just opened in Blenheim, Marlborough.
The $20 million bioactives innovation centre is the brainchild of New Zealand’s largest seafood company, Sanford, and it will make the most of the beneficial properties of several of the country’s under-appreciated marine products.
Andrew Stanley, Sanford’s GM of innovation, said in a press release that the plant will do two key things.
With the incorporation, the Initiative today has 14 member production companies committed to increasing sustainability, transparency and cooperation.
The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) has today officially welcomed Salmones Aysén, a Chilean producer of coho salmon, as a new member of the leading sustainability initiative. With this addition, the GSI now has 14 salmon farming companies and eight supply chain member companies, spanning all the regions in which they operate. Together, member companies commit to adopting the initiative's core principles of increasing sustainability, transparency and cooperation to accelerate improvements in the industry's environmental performance at speed and scale.

Spain and Croatia have been given €1.12 billion and €243.6 million respectively in EU funding to help promote sustainable fisheries and aquaculture and stimulate innovation and growth.
The European Commission has adopted the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) Programme for the countries and will implement the EU common fisheries policy and priorities outlined in the European Green Deal.
