Asunto: Actemsa – Leal Santos Group becomes 38 th Member of the IPNLF
Mensaje:
[LONDON, UK] Actemsa – Leal Santos Group, one of Spain’s leading tuna fish
processing and marketing companies, has become the 38 th Member of the
International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF), the non-profit association that is
committed to developing and supporting responsible one-by- one tuna fisheries
and supply chains.
Founded in 1987 in Galicia, Spain, Actemsa processes more than 40,000
tonnes of tuna annually through its own and outsourced plants. In 2006, the
company acquired Industrias Alimenticias Leal Santos Ltda, one of Brazil’s
largest producers of tuna loins and owner of six oceanic pole-and- line fishing
boats.
“Actemsa – Leal Santos’s membership of the International Pole & Line
Foundation is a further commitment in our support for improved tuna
management, and our desire to see dynamic measures adopted in these
fisheries that safeguard stocks and the futures of fishing communities. As well
as underpinning our historical engagement with these fisheries, we believe
IPNLF Membership provides additional assurances to our customers and the
marketplace that we are supplying fish that is both sustainably and ethically
sourced,” says Antonio Fernández, Actemsa’s Deputy Director of Production.
Commenting on Actemsa – Leal Santos Group’s membership, Martin Purves,
Managing Director of IPNLF, says, “We are delighted to welcome Actemsa –
one of Spain’s leading tuna processors of pole-and- line tuna – as our latest
Member. The International Pole & Line Foundation is a hub for proactive
companies like Actemsa who want to help drive the sustainable and equitable
development of one-by- one caught tuna. The global demand for these products
continues to grow at a very rapid rate; as such, IPNLF believes all stakeholders
have a crucial role to play in helping the industry bridge the supply gap.”
IPNLF helps to ensure the demand for one-by- one caught tuna can be met
without compromising the sustainability of the fisheries, while at the same time
providing much-needed support for fishing communities who are heavily reliant
upon those stocks. IPNLF’s role is two-fold: It promotes the environmental and
social benefits derived from one-by- one fisheries around the world; and it also
help develop and support these fisheries to improve their long-term viability and
sustainability.
