Argentina and Spain sign memorandum of cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture
(ARGENTINA, 7/30/2018)
Minister of Agribusiness of the Nation Luis Miguel Etchevehere and his Spanish counterpart, Luis Planas, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Bilateral Cooperation on Fisheries and Aquaculture, in the framework of the meeting of Agriculture Ministers of the G-20, which took place between July 27 and 28 in Buenos Aires.
In this framework, a collaboration scheme is established for fisheries, which will allow coordination and ensure the conservation and sustainable use of straddling fish stocks, the fight against illegal and unreported illegal fishing (IUU), and collaboration in scientific research in the area adjacent to the Argentine exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Likewise, the agreement establishes a framework of collaboration for the promotion and development of technological exchange in the production and commercialization of aquaculture products through the use of training programs. It will also promote commercial exchanges and investments in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
For this, both countries will exchange information on fishing, scientific knowledge of fisheries research and related activities in the area adjacent to the Argentine EEZ. In addition, they will share information and technology in catching techniques as well as farming ones, processing, distribution, transport and marketing of fish and aquaculture products.
In the same way, the memorandum contemplates the exchange in terms of tools used by both countries to monitor and control fishing activity to combat illegal fishing.
