Former StarKist executive pleads guilty of tuna price-fixing conspiracy
(UNITED STATES, 6/30/2017)
A former StarKist executive pleaded guilty to canned seafood price-fixing with officials from other tuna companies in the United States from 2011 to 2013, according to the Justice Department.
Stephen Hodge, a former senior vice president of sales at the firm, a subsidiary of the Dongwon Group of South Korea, pleaded guilty to a one-count criminal information that was filed on May 30 in federal court in San Francisco.
The Department statement also revealed that Hodge, who agreed to pay a fine and cooperate with the investigation by the department's antitrust division, will be sentenced by the court later.
Also involved in the price fixing conspiracy were two Bumble Bee Foods executives, who had agreed to plead guilty to price-fixing in December.
Bumble Bee Foods had agreed in May to plead guilty to one count of fixing the prices of canned tuna and to pay a criminal fine of USD 25 million.
“With today’s plea, the Antitrust Division continues to send a strong signal that senior executives will be held accountable for their actions,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Andrew Finch of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division.
The division, along with our law enforcement colleagues, will continue to investigate price fixing among packaged seafood companies and the executives who worked at those companies," Finch added.
